About this listen

Prepare to be captivated by an extraordinary journey of faith, courage, and resilience in Out of Africa and Into the Corps: From Missionary to Mercenary, the riveting audiobook memoir by retired Marine Colonel Dan Hunter Wilson. Spanning continents and decades, this prequel to his four previously published works—Undaunted Gladiator, A 110 Percent Mentality, The Battle of Fallujah

Narrated with the raw authenticity of a seasoned warrior and the heartfelt sincerity of a man of faith, this audiobook is a testament to the power of leadership, survival, and redemption. From swimming in the Nile River with crocodiles lurking nearby to crafting slingshots and hunting with indigenous friends, Wilson’s early years were a crucible of adventure and survival. These formative experiences instilled in him core principles of servant leadership, humility, and resilience, which he carried into the Marine Corps as a “Mustang” officer—one who rose from enlisted ranks to command.

Wilson enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1981. His rise through the ranks—was fueled by the same tenacity he honed in Africa. Commissioned as an officer in 1988, he led platoons, companies, and battalions through combat zones, including the Gulf War and the Second Battle of Fallujah, earning 52 medals and ribbons, including the Bronze Star and two Combat Action Ribbons.

Wilson’s leadership philosophy, shaped by his father’s mantra to “treat the little guy like a king” and “never beat your own chest,” shines through in stories of commanding the vaunted Spartacus Battalion and mentoring Marines who still seek him out in retirement.

Embark on this unforgettable journey with Out of Africa and Into the Corps. Let Colonel Dan Wilson’s story of faith, fight, and freedom inspire you—Semper Fidelis!

What loved about this book is learning the life Col Wilson lived. Amazing how some Americans are all over the world doing great work to be Jesus to people and care that is needed for a healthy life. Another amazing thing to me is to understand the life people I have had the honor of serving with. While the Col and I had little interaction our paths crossed a couple of times at MCRD, San Diego, and at 1MEF on board Camp Pendleton and Foward. Such an amazing account of an honorable Marine that has kept the faith.
SEMPER FIDELIS Col Wilson.

Such an amazing account of an honorable Marine that has kept the faith.

Loved writing and narrating my fifth book. I highly recommend it to all, if I may say so myself!
