About this listen

Ruth Gruener was a hidden child during the Holocaust. At the end of the war, she and her parents were overjoyed to be free. But their struggles as displaced people had just begun.

In war-ravaged Europe, they waited for paperwork for a chance to come to America. Once they arrived in Brooklyn, they began to build a new life but spoke little English. Ruth started at a new school and tried to make friends - but continued to fight nightmares and flashbacks of her time during World War II.

The family's perseverance is a classic story of the American dream but also illustrates the difficulties that millions of immigrants face in the aftermath of trauma.

This is a gripping and human account of a survivor's journey forward with timely connections to refugee and immigrant experiences worldwide today.

With a foreword by Alan Gratz, New York Times best-selling author of Refugee.

EXTRAORDINARY. GORGEOUS.

This audiobook blew me away. The story, the narration, the music, the tag ending read by the author.... I cried so many times while listening I can’t even say. I was blown away by how skillfully and soulfully the narrator transmitted Ruth’s experience, and her artful dynamics, vulnerability, and care that made me lose myself completely in the story. I was spellbound. Ruth and Natasha transmitted an experience straight to my soul, and I am forever changed. Thank you.

Relatable to today

Loved the book. A open eyes moment that the events that played out for Jewish surviors in the mid 40's to early 50's is still playing out today to Black and immigrate people. So sad that more people are not wanting to learn from the past and live in unity and respect for everyone.

Very good

My 9 year old daughter came home from school with this book as assigned reading. I was nervous that it would be too difficult (emotionally) to read. So I decided to read with her. We talked about parts of the book and she was not overwhelmed with sadness. Now that I have finished it I will talk with her more.
It is appropriate for fourth grade though some of the words are difficult.
But the story itself is also very interesting. I appreciated how she shared her story without getting too graphic so young children can learn as well. I hope people will read this now and stop the hate for Jews. It seems to be escalating again right now. This book is a good reminder that something like the Holocaust should never happen again.

Fantastic!

Absolutely loved it! I cried at the beginning and the end. Hearing Ruth's voice was so powerful. A must read for all middle aged students (10 and up).
