 異常に潔癖な息子を持つ一家と、駆け落ちに走る高校生の娘を持つ別の一家。物質的には満たされた高度成長期において、一見、幸福そうに見える双方の家庭には外部からは窺い知れぬ深い闇があった。

裕福で社会的地位の高いふたつの家族の「内と外」をモチーフに、富裕層が、断絶のうちにじわじわと崩壊していく様を痛烈な筆致で描ききり、1973年当時、大きな反響を呼んだ。後にテレビドラマ化もされた作品で、時代の嚆矢ともなった問題作。
