Publisher's summary

Speak enters the world of Gossip Girl in this modern immigrant story from New York Times best-selling author Kelly Yang about two girls navigating wealth, power, friendship, and trauma.

They’re called parachutes: teenagers dropped off to live in private homes and study in the United States while their wealthy parents remain in Asia. Claire Wang never thought she’d be one of them, until her parents pluck her from her privileged life in Shanghai and enroll her at a high school in California.

Suddenly she finds herself living in a stranger’s house, with no one to tell her what to do for the first time in her life. She soon embraces her newfound freedom, especially when the hottest and most eligible parachute, Jay, asks her out.

Dani De La Cruz, Claire’s new host sister, couldn’t be less thrilled that her mom rented out a room to Claire. An academic and debate team star, Dani is determined to earn her way into Yale, even if it means competing with privileged kids who are buying their way to the top. But Dani’s game plan veers unexpectedly off course when her debate coach starts working with her privately.

As they steer their own distinct paths, Dani and Claire keep crashing into one another, setting a course that will change their lives forever.

Definitely a must listen!!!

This book was really good. It does hit some sensitive topics. I loved that it’s not something I would normally pick up to read but learning about “parachute” students was really interesting. Please read this!

So glad that women......

So glad that women all over are standing up against the horrible injustices that have been happening for years. May God continue to give them strength to do so.

Empowering Book

Parachutes had great characters and a plot that makes me feel hopeful about overcoming obstacles. My favorite voice actor was Claire, and the overall voice acting was genuine. I found it difficult to listen to the more graphic scenes, but I listened anyway because they really were important and relatable. Books like this are so necessary, and it made me think about how im going to share my story and help prevent stuff like this.

This was a truly amazing story and I had the greatest time enjoying it.

This book gave me hope that even if there isn’t always justice there are people fighting for reconstruction of today’s society normals of down playing sexual assault. Plus it read well and was very enticing.

Parachutes

A very emotional book, but educational. Its heartbreaking to hear that this happens to our children. Parents and children trusted the school to help, guide and mold them, not to be the one who failed them. Great book. Depicts situation that is hard to overcome by any teenager.

Great story, difficult subject

I appreciated the trigger warning at the beginning of the book. I was able to put it aside until I was in a mental state strong enough to listen without spiraling into my trauma. This book touches on very difficult subjects that we really need to talk about more, to provide support & understanding to those who have experienced this trauma. Well done! I will be recommending this book to others.
