Story
For 30 years, they have avoided the outbreak of walking death that has consumed America's heartland. They have secured a small compound near the ruins of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Isolated from the world, they have remained blissfully unaware of what lies outside in the region known as the Dead Lands. Until now. Led by a military vet who's seen better days, the inexperienced offspring of the original survivors form a small expedition to explore the wastelands around them. Small pockets of humanity hide in the shadows: some scared, some mad, all dangerous. This is the New World.

Deacon is a character that enters in the second book in the Growler Chronicles series. We are introduced to him after he has become somewhat battle hardened. This is his ‘origin story’. We see his journey. How did he survive the early days of the apocalypse? Be warned, he has, perhaps, the most harrowing story of any of the protagonists in the growler chronicles. He starts Z day in the nightmare called Highschool, he is 14, young, dumb, and full of… distractions, and self-recriminations. He is a survivor though. But what he faces in a pitch black basement... What I’m about to tell you is going to be hard to believe… The truth has been hidden for a long, long time… Do you have what it takes to find the truth? I wasn’t looking for anything. You might be the kind of person who wants to know what’s going on around you, but I was content just doing my job and being left alone. But sometimes life gets messy and the curtain that hides reality from most of us gets pulled back. All I can tell you is… there are some things you can’t unsee. So tread carefully. What you have in your hands is the true account of Hank Downes. I thought of ...

Story
It's been three long years since Deadbreak. That's what everyone's calling it - the day the dead rose. Every day since then, Jeremiah Reid has had one goal: to make his way back to his daughter. With his four-legged companion, Joe, Jeremiah has to travel a lawless wasteland teeming with zombies, bandits, and worse, like people who put anchovies on pizza (you know who you are). It's a new world out there, and no one is safe. People are weary, cities are in ruin, supplies are scarce, and brains are on the menu.

College freshman Parker Osborne is having the worst day ever. He humiliated himself trying to pick up a cute guy, he hasn't made any friends at school, and his stupidly hot jerk of a TA gave him a crappy grade on his paper. He's going to drop Adam Hawkins' film class and start fresh tomorrow after he's had a good sulk. But Parker's about to find out what a bad day really looks like - if he can survive the night. A virus is unleashed, transforming infected people into zombielike killers.

Great story
AI voice was terrible. The first books virtual voice was the best but they were all bad. Nevertheless, the story was very good. Some of the themes were irritating... like everyone treating Deacon like a kid. At this point he's 15 that's old age when you're dealing with Zombies. Let that boy be great. Anyway, worth the listen or read. Enjoy!

the end?
I really like this take on the zombie apocalypse, I hope this wasn't the last addition and there is at least one more to tie up loose ends. Not a fan of the virtual narration, but this one was better than most.
