About this listen

Allegra Tarot has an uncanny knack for becoming anyone she wants.

Depending on the job, she can transform the carriage of her body or the cadence of her speech. With the pop of a collar or the tousle of her hair, she can dupe your perceptions.

As a former T.V. actress, she’s got chameleon abilities, no doubt, and they come in handy now that she straps a Diamondback 9mm and prowls the gritty backstreets of working-class Hollywood, running the grind as a skip tracer.

If you want to follow along on her investigations, you better lock in. It’s bound to get your blood thumping, your adrenaline spiking.

Partial in Blood is a propulsive, character-driven crime thriller rife with twisty turns and piquant humor. Tag along with Allegra as she leverages her performance chops to investigate the disappearance of a troubled young woman, in the process uncovering a brutal shadow world of corruption and deception.

The author paints such intricate pictures as he brings to life the gritty shallowness but ultimately redemptive qualities of modern Los Angeles. The protagonist is completely original, equal parts endearing and frustrating, all in service to creating a fully fleshed out human being, warts and all. The characters are all rendered thusly, their pain and the pain they cause portrayed via well-crafted nuance. The story’s twists are turns are well-earned. Nothing feels fabricated. You are a fly on a wall watching real life at its most exhilarating!

Extremely well written and compelling Whodunnit

Story line brilliantly conceived and delivered. It was out of my normal reading genre but worth the jump into a modern day mystery. I felt like I knew LA by the end.

Fast pace with excellent character development.

Really good modern LA detective novel, reminiscent of talented writers like Timothy Hallinan. This author, Blair Kroeber, effectively blends action, drama, and comedy...but the real strength of the book is the pathos behind the protagonist's backstory (and how her current case helps her face the pain of her past). The narrator (Emily Woo Zeller) does a very good job jumping back and forth between the descriptive scene-setting and the snappy dialogue, highlighting the unique idiosyncrasies of LA's places and people. I've "read" this book twice (once on Kindle and once on Audible), and enjoyed both presentations. The Audible version helps bring out how easily this story could transfer to the screen. If a streamer buys the rights, I'd be more than happy to "read" it for a third time.

Could Definitely See This Being a Movie or Series

This novel has a skip-tracer protagonist with a name that hints at the mystical working the all-too-earthly streets of everyday LA. I won't give away the plot's compelling turns through criminal and family matters, but we eagerly follow Allegra Tarot through both. Kroeber's swift, skillful prose is in the spirit of this book's title: there's a continually lean, tempting quality to this story drawn in the results of violence. Get this book today. You'll read it in a hurry.

Stunning new neo-noir by Blair Kroeber
