About this listen

Chris Knowles was born on October 24th, 1949. He was raised in Washington, DC. He entered The Sidwell Friends School, Washington's most exclusive coeducational college preparatory school, in September of 1952 at the age of two. In the Fall of 1962, he was 13 years old and beginning his Eighth Grade year when the photointerpreters at the National Photo Interpretation Center at the Washington Navy Yard detected Soviet offensive ballistic missiles stationed on the island of Cuba. This marked the beginning of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In the intervening years, he attended The University of Virginia and Georgetown University as the missile crisis transitioned into the Vietnam War. On Friday, March 13th, 1970, Chris joined the United States Air Force. He became a part of the service's intelligence community. A decade later, at the age of 23, in May of 1972 and again in December of that year, he played an instrumental part in the conduct and conclusion of the Vietnam War. Following his discharge, Chris left the East Coast for Middle America. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Nebraska and his Master of Public Administration degree while serving as a Graduate Fellow at Drake University. After 30 years as a healthcare executive, he retired and became a full-time novelist. This book is a collection of autobiographical reminiscences of that ten-year period in his life.
