Publisher's summary

At last - Cajeiri has his young guests from the starship, three young folk entranced by weather and trees and creatures with minds of their own. It’s all he dreamed of.... But now safety is foremost: Cajeiri’s grandfather has been assassinated, hostile Assassins Guild invaded Great-uncle’s house, and now Bren Cameron, paidhi-aiji, who was sent to keep the aiji’s son safe, has more than the young guests on his mind. The aiji-dowager knows who’s to blame for the attacks, and they’re going after him. The fact that the person responsible is in the heart of Assassins’ Guild Headquarters, the most closely guarded fortress on the continent, is not going to stop her. Bren Cameron has the pieces now, of a decades-old plot that’s been threaded through Guild actions going back before his arrival on the continent, and more - he knows the person responsible is going to find out he knows, and find out within hours. They have no choice. If they don’t move, the other side will. And the lives of the boy, the guests, the entire ruling family are at stake.

One of better stories!

A fast paced story with multiple themes at the same time! One of the best!

Great book, great performance, great series

What a tour de force! I thought I'd listen to the first thirty minutes or so the night this book was released. Ha! I couldn't put it down. I stayed up most of the night listening to it, then took the day off work and listened to the rest of it nonstop to the end. And it was worth it!

Lots of excitement, engaging characters, important conflicts, and satisfying outcomes. I was braced for long boring summaries of what had gone before, but happily Cherryh sidestepped all that. She slipped in the needed background information through interesting new content.

Many cheers for Danial May's brilliant reading and C.J. Cherryh's brilliant writing.

end of sequence 5

This is the last book in this sequence and really at this time 30 Oct 2014 this is the last book in this whole series of books but more are being created now so if like me you really liked these books you want more but after reading these books for like 9 months I want to take a break so I a few years I hope a few more sequences are released and I can get back into this.

This whole series was great, a few of the books were a little better then the others otherwise it would have been a 5 star across the board.

The narrator was simply great, he did a great job at the different voices with exception of maybe a few that I thought was someone else - like Brens Brother and some guy from the state department, the voices sound pretty much the same but I guess this can happen in real life and there are only so many voices one can do and there were lots of characters in this whole series so the narrator did a great job, 5 star for sure.

Foreigner universe series

This was one of the best in the series.
Bren,Jase and the three human children celebrate Cajeiri birthday in several places and several ways. Meanwhile a shooting war erupts, there are assassinations, mecheita are ridden and Cajeiri’s pet scares assassins out of hiding. The Guild solves a conspiracy.
I can see the Gala with the people all in court dress and the ceramic displays in glass cases. The museum president drones on about ceramics while the crowd ebbs and flows. As usual the food is mouthwatering ( avoiding the alkaloids)
One scene sticks with me- Cajeiri ‘s great uncle (who hated humans) gives the little girl one of the irreplaceable ceramic cups to hold and plans surprises for the kids purely for their pleasure.
I’ve enjoyed all of the nooks but I loved this one.

another good book in the series

the author continues to develop her characters and gives a continued voice to one of the young alien characters in the series. it's a nice contrast to have both an alien voice and a human voice in the narration. you really need to read the previous books in the series too appreciate the full depth of this story.

Entertaining, satisfying, great read!

I have so enjoyed listening to the Foreigner series, even book 15. The book continues right where the previous book left off and takes us through the heir's birthday celebration, his 9th birthday. One would assume that Cherryh is not finished with this series. The light humor by the author throughout the story and Daniel May's narration and voices for the different characters is so well done. Between this book and the preceding book I listened to the first book and could really tell the difference in May's style.

The story is still enjoyable and refreshing. Always some plot to overthrow the current regime with twists and turns and Bren Cameron, our hero, to save the day. Some may tire of the series but I've thoroughly enjoyed each book. I am hoping this is not her last.

Still highly recommended.

Not terrible, but not the best, either

I forget between books how much I really don't like Bren as he ages. He's become so spoiled, so pompus with his status and riches and he's clearly a weak weenie, always suffering with headaches and upset stomachs, overly emotional and clearly self centered. He compares poorly with the ativi associates, following their fashion and customs but not their strengths. I love this author but feel her Faded Sun trilogy is a much stronger story although so very similar to Foreigner. The human envoy in Faded Sun is much more likeable. I wish she had taken that storyline out into more volumes rather than Foreigner. I'm thinking this may be a good stopping place for the series as it seems the first third of every book is always a retelling of the history and the balance is Bren worrying about one of "his people" getting hurt while doing their job or him obsessing over his lack of sleep, lack of information or lack of clean clothes or torn lace. I love the rest of the cast, however.

Too much review of the past

from entire series. Seems like almost a quarter of the book was spent going over the past. This is a trend in otherwise excellent series. Should be handled by making these fairly short books twice as long.
