About this listen

On the Flathead Indian Reservation, summer is ending, and Louise White Elk is determined to forge her own path. Raised by her Grandmother Magpie after the death of her mother, Louise and her younger sister have grown up into the harsh social and physical landscape of western Montana in the 1940s, where Native people endure boarding schools and life far from home. As she approaches adulthood, Louise hopes to create an independent life for herself and an improved future for her family—but three persistent men have other plans.

Since childhood, Louise has been pursued by Baptiste Yellow Knife, feared not only for his rough-and-tumble ways, but also for the preternatural gifts of his bloodline. Baptiste's rival is his cousin, Charlie Kicking Woman: a man caught between worlds, torn between his duty as a tribal officer and his fascination with Louise. And then there is Harvey Stoner. The white real estate mogul can offer Louise her wildest dreams of freedom, but at what cost?

As tensions mount, Louise finds herself trying to outrun the bitter clutches of winter and the will of powerful men, facing choices that will alter her life—and end another's—forever.

The hopelessness

I liked that it kept moving, kept me interested. Well written, rather harsh, but great characters and well written.

Ive read it many times and gift it to my friends

PermaRed is one of if not my favoriate book.. I rarely read a book more than once. I have read it a number of times and added it to my audio collection so I can listen to it on the road.

Ms. Magpie Earling's characters come to life with real accountings. I feel like I have known or know them. They are beautiful and heartbreaking people whose life I can relate to. The relationships are intense and like so many in real life both messy and complicated.

It is so easy to visualize the beautiful area of Montana. Having driven these roads I can say she is spot on.

I hear or read something I missed every time I listen to her book or read it. It well worth your time.

Strength & Resilence

The story was beautifully written while dealing with difficult & tragic circumstances. Louise was my favorite character. She was a survivor. I loved her love for & dedication to her family. I loved how she cared for her grandmother. I respected how her character accepted people as they were but still allowed for their future potential.
I really loved the way the author described the landscape. How the landscape metaphorically represented the people & their emotions.

The love story!

Interesting and flawed characters, each one. Would maybe love a little more about the culture and history.
