Editorial reviews

Listening to Juliet Stevenson's marvelous narration, one wonders if she collaborated with Austen in another life. Her narration enhances the text so beautifully that one thinks the author must have coached her. Stevenson applies vocal interpretations that make the characters pop with life. Mary whines and exclaims perfectly; Admiral Croft snaps listeners to attention; Sir Walter Elliot effervesces with indignation over the state of his finances. Only Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth speak in calm, measured tones. Nestled in social commentary targeting the matter of class, the story traces the twists and turns that Anne and Frederick must navigate on the road to love.

exceptionally wonderful

Anyone who loves Jane Austen will love the narration by Juliet Stevenson. Her ability to weave this story embodying characteristics and giving each a distinct voice brings this story alive. Brava.

if I was to criticize anything...I truly don't like the music selections as transitions. I find them superfluous, superficial, and trite.

Excellent editing

Superb narration of a well-edited classic. I recommend many books narrated by Juliette Stevenson.

Should have been 5 stars

Juliet Stevenson’s narration is perfection but someone decided to introduce musical interludes that were unnecessary and in my opinion jarringly dreadful. Also, I wish that the recording was more clearly identified as abridged.

Wonderful.

I love anything by Jane Austen, and I think this is one of her best works. It's a sweet love story, and I enjoyed listening to the narrator tell this shorter version of it. It's a good abridgement with bits and pieces of classical music thrown in to help things along, and the story flowed just fine. I love, love, love it! Definitely a must listen for all Jane Austen fans.

Not Advertised on Audible as Abridged!!!

Wonderful story! Amazing reading as always by Juliet Stevenson. But nowhere in the description did it reference that this is an abridged version. And it’s weirdly abridged with characters referencing events that weren’t included in this abridged version. I see now there’s a full version available. One day, when this story is less fresh, perhaps I’ll buy it.

struggled to relate

The setting just makes it hard for me to relate. I can understand how other people would love the book.
