Better than imagined

I thought the Pimsleur courses would be like other learn-while-listening audio courses. I thought it would just be back and forth, one language and then the translation. I hoped it would be better in that the sentences would be related. This is so much better. Everything is related. You feel like you are quickly progressing even while reviewing.
Pimsleur is now my goto for listening practice.

Oddly Specific, Useless Language

The deeper I get through these, the more of a scam they feel like. The narrator is trying to get us to memorize how to say things like "Mt. Takao was recently designated as a world heritage site" and "have you read The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa", which could only be used in obscure hypothetical conversations that learners will never have. This has been happening since at least as early as the Japanese 2 course, where the narrator is trying to teach you how to say you know sign language or that you volunteer by reading to elderly people.

Strongly displeased with the direction these lessons are going in. Why not teach common nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and basic grammar so we can have a chance at actually speaking Japanese instead of memorizing weird specific phrases?
