About this listen
My motivation to escape to an equestrian lifestyle in the countryside was to experience a pleasant respite from the hectic pace and often callous and compassionless interactions of the city. But despite the allure of the charming rural scenery with elegant dressage shows and exciting jumping competitions, I soon learned that beneath the veneer of gentrified civility history often has a disquieting tendency to repeat itself.
Age-old battles when horses were mercilessly used and sacrificed without empathy or humaneness to achieve power and victory, proved to be not so different than the modern-day conflict I became entangled in between altruistic animal lovers and conniving charlatans with thinly veiled malevolent intentions….

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

These Desired Things is a stimulating, philosophical offering; a tour de force in creative writing. Praised in review as "imagery and literature at its finest", defining this book's genre seems largely superfluous - for its immersive, lyrical text is part fiction, part memoir, part autobiography. The chapters are presented as a collection of 11 short stories: all of them varying in their individual plots, their settings and their style, yet all of them remain essential elements of the whole; for running through each is a series of subtle, uniting threads.

Twenty years ago, Nancy Shulins let go of one dream - having a child - and worked toward another one: learning to ride and, eventually, having her own horse. In the process, she learned what it means to love another being so much you can’t imagine life without them.

Story
This is Michael Krupa’s story of how in 1939 he escaped the German invasion of Poland only to be captured by the Red Army, accused of espionage and interrogated in the notorious Lubianka prison. He was then sent to the infamous Pechora Gulag, where most inmates died of overwork and starvation within a year. Amazingly, Kupra then escaped and made the gruelling journey from Siberia to Afghanistan. This is a remarkable true story of survival and also gives a chilling insight into the brutality of Stalinist Russia.

Instead, Lay Me Down, a former racehorse with a foal close on her heels, walked right up that ramp and into Susan's life. This gentle creature, malnourished, plagued by pneumonia and an eye infection, had endured a rough road, but somehow her heart was still open and generous.
