In a human lab behind locked doors and bulletproof glass, a group of scientists works on a covert project. They keep from forming personal contacts and even avoid knowing each other’s names. Together they refine the virus set loose on the world. The goal is simple: eliminate all creatures.

In a bar hidden from human sight, a secret meeting reveals a startling reality: a mysterious illness is killing creatures. All creatures with genetic markers are falling ill, and many of them are dying. Even humans with genetic traits are not immune to the effects. I enjoyed the pace of this story, with its personable characters, and interesting mystery. The genetic aspect was particularly intriguing, and the descriptions of food and meals were so appealing that I want to find the diner that appeared from time to time!

Perhaps because my first reading in this series is not the first book of the series, I wished for a bit more back story: more info about the different creatures, as well as the history of their relationship with humans.

The narration was fine, and moved the story forward. That said, I wanted to feel that the narrator was telling me a story, rather than reading me a story.

If you enjoy the fantasy genre, good mysteries, and engaging characters, you’ll enjoy Plague of the Lost Ones.

The book parallels the world's experience with the COVID pandemic, but this time the virus is attacking the fae, witches, werewolves, demons, vampires, and spirits. The story revolves around the search for who is doing this and the search for a cure. There are a lot of characters and the author does a pretty good job of fleshing them out so they remain distinct. The reader changes his voice to indicate different genders and species, but doesn't devolve into caricature. He also keeps the same voice throughout for each character which is important with so many.
It's a quick read or in this case listen and keeps you wanting to learn how it ends! Recommend for fantasy fans, but can also be enjoyed by those who like a good story read by a good reader.
