About this listen

"Pollyanna" is a best-selling novel by Eleanor H. Porter that is considered a classic of children's literature, with the title character's name becoming a popular term for someone with the same very optimistic outlook. Also, the subconscious bias towards the positive is often described as the Pollyanna principle...

The title character is named Pollyanna Whittier, a young orphan who goes to live in Beldingsville, Vermont, with her wealthy but stern and cold spinster Aunt Polly, who does not want to take in Pollyanna, but feels it is her duty to her late sister. Pollyanna's philosophy of life centers on what she calls "The Glad Game," an optimistic and positive attitude she learned from her father. The game consists of finding something to be glad about in every situation, no matter how bleak it may be. Thus she transforms everything around her, but will even stern Aunt Polly be affected?©2016 Audioliterature (P)2016 Audioliterature

As good as A little Princess!

This is a MARVELOUS READ! This book is every bit as good as A Little Princess, is as sweet, inspiring, uplifting, wholesome, etc. I can't believe it's not talked about and as beloved as A Little Princess is. I am SO glad it was referenced in passing in Ender's Game, that I went looking for it, and that Audible had it! This should be considered a classic, and, like most books that are made into movies, MUCH better than the Disney movie (though I always liked the movie, as well). From now on, when I get down and lose my positive outlook, I think my remedy will be to reread this book and start playing Polyanna's "glad game!"

The version my app downloaded had a phrase in German at the beginning that quite startled me, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to stand the reader's performance at first (even his naming of the book's title and author at the beginning of every chapter irked me), but I enjoyed the tale enough that I was eventually able to lay those concerns aside for the most part, and I was amply rewarded for doing so.

It will make you glad. Truly.

The story is a delight, perfect for all ages (though forewarning, the word "ejaculate" is frequently used innocently and antiquatedly in place of the word "exclaim"). I enjoyed the narrator's performance, especially Nancy's voice.

What a DELIGHT!

At first I didn't understand why they had a man reading a story with mostly female characters, but not long into it I started thinking he is the perfect narrator for this delightful story. I'm sure this is not intended be be humorous, but listening to Edward Miller narrate it made me smile again and again. He portrays Pollyanna's attitude to life flawlessly. Pollyanna, the 11-year old star of this story, finds something to be glad about in every situation. I tend to be Aunt Polly, not Pollyanna, so this is a story I will come back to again and again when I'm feeling grumpy. This is a MUST READ for everyone, unless you can't read and are deaf. Too bad because Pollyanna would give you a reason to be glad for that too.

Pollyanna makes me glad, glad, glad!

POLLYANNA is a 107 year old American children's classic about an 11 year old girl written by Eleanor Porter. I suspect that most adults today read it as a child. Pollyanna has a wonderful message about life not just for children but for any person of any age; it is uplifting! Audible has several editions of the book available. This one is not only the least expensive it is likely the best. Although Kindle Unlimited members can listen to it for free, you will want to buy it so it will be in your Audible library.

For those not familiar with this novel it is about the "glad game" young Pollyanna was taught by her dad before he died (her mother had already died). When 11 year old Pollyanna goes to live with her rather severe Aunt Polly after she is an orphan the hopelessly optimistic girl begins teaching others the "glad game" and in doing so changes many lives for the better. Modern psychology during the last 50 years as began using the terns Pollyanna Principle and Pollyanna Hypothesis. This little novel has had quite and impact.

The first classical book my son read and listen

We really love the pitch and intonation my son read and listen to. We are not English native speakers, but we can understand and enjoy this book well.
