About this listen

Instant New York Times Best Seller • Named One Of The Best Children’s Books Of The Year By The Wall Street Journal

“Perfection.” (The Wall Street Journal)

The best-selling author of Wonder returns with an enthralling adventure about a boy on a quest to rescue his father, with only a ghost as his companion and a mysterious pony as his guide.

Twelve-year-old Silas is awoken in the dead of night by three menacing horsemen who take his father away. Silas is left shaken, scared, and alone, except for the presence of his companion, Mittenwool...who happens to be a ghost. When a pony shows up at his door, Silas makes the courageous decision to leave his home and embark on a perilous journey to find his father. Along the way, he will face his fears to unlock the secrets of his past and explore the unfathomable mysteries of the world around him.

R. J. Palacio spins a harrowing yet distinctly beautiful coming-of-age story about the power of love and the ties that bind us across distance and time. With the poignant depth of War Horse and the singular voice of True Grit, this is one of those rare books poised to become an instant classic for readers of all ages.

“A wonderful story of courage.... It's got the feeling of a modern classic.” (Jorge Lacera, NPR)

Critic reviews

"R.J. Palacio, author of a modern classic children’s book of our era, has somehow crafted what feels like an entirely different breed of classic: page-turning and heart expanding, elegiac and adventurous, reminiscent of Jack London, with mediations on love and faith that feel timeless and utterly necessary to our current moment." —Gayle Forman, author of If I Stay and Frankie & Bug

A magical storyPony is pure delight.” —Rebecca Stead, Newbery Medal–winning author of When You Reach Me

“A mystery, a frontier adventure, a ghost story: Pony tells the tale of a child ‘with fire in his mind,’ and it will light a fire in yours. R. J. Palacio’s most ambitious book yet, it is as compelling as it is satisfying.” —Adam Gidwitz, Newbery Honor–winning author of The Inquisitor’s Tale

Captivating!

Absolutely magnetic! I couldn't stop listening. The narrator did an amazing job of bringing the characters to life. I'll definitely be listening to this one again.

I wished this book will never end

One day I walked to a book store with my daughter. I wanted her to choose a book that interests her. I noticed Pony and as we are both horse people, it got our both attention. It's so far one of the few books she have readed so that she's reading it for hours. I felt I should read or listen it too. Found it from Audible and oh - I loved to listen it. It is so well written and the whole story is just so real. Amazing how a writer can compose sutch a story. Beautiful. I loved to listen it.

Beautiful book

I’m an adult who listens to young adult fiction on occasion, to get a break from the trash that is written for adults these days. I also have young nieces who may read this book someday. What a beautiful story! This book is full of teaching moments for parents, and I hope many parents will talk to their children if they have questions or concerns. It is just a lovely story.

SO Good!

At the very beginning, I wasn't sure how I felt about the book, but I quickly became engrossed. It is so different than anything else I have read and I love its unique story line. Most of all, I loved the different characters and the themes of Love, humanity, knowledge, and kindness. I'm already planning on how I could incorporate this in my high school class. Definitely a must read.

Pony is a little horse.

I liked the part when Pony took his owner
Silas to a forest with his neighbors.

Brought to life by outstanding narrator

The story was a delightful exploration of a boy's journey into the harsh realities of life through overcoming a series of heartbreaking challenges. His ability to speak to ghosts while weilding an unwavering belief in his parents, shapes his young adult experience. The narrator did an outstanding job bringing the characters to life. I would not have been as engaged or appreciated the story without his presentation.

Wonderful story

R.J. Palacio’s Pony is an ageless story that is part western, part ghost story, and mostly a story about the bond between family that can stretch beyond worlds. We loves this book. It has everything we tend to love in a family read-aloud: suspense, acts of courage and love, and it doesn’t shy away from the gritty and grim parts of life. It marches through those moments with honesty and grace, giving us much to discuss and ponder together.

A Beautiful Story

This is my favorite book of 2022. The writing is absolutely beautiful. The narration welcomed me into the story slowly at first. But a couple of chapters in, I got lost in this amazing story and basically read 3/4 of the story in one sitting.

The synopsis tells you everything you need to know about the plot. At the end of the book, the author gives you a peak into the creative process she used to write this gem. Do yourself a favor and read every word she writes, or speaks, for those of us who listened to the audiobook. Her process enhances almost every detail of the story. I won’t say more because I want you to make these discoveries on your own.

Now, I’m going back to page one to re-read this story. I am sure the author’s comments will enhance every detail in this book. I hope you love this story as much as I did.
