About this listen
Embark on a journey through the remarkable life and legacy of Pope John XXIII.
Perhaps no one had such a great influence on the Roman Catholic Church in the 20th century as Pope John XXIII, who was canonized by Pope Francis on April 27, 2014. Born Angelo Roncalli (1881-1963), he rose from humble beginnings to become a passionate advocate for social justice and world peace. His papacy was marked by compassion, charity, and love.
In this course you will join ecclesial expert and Georgetown professor Gerard Mannion in encountering the enduring charisma of Saint John XXIII. In 12 fascinating lectures, you will journey through his inspiring life, his powerful leadership in calling the Second Vatican Council, and his lasting legacy for the world today. John XXIII (r. 1958-1963) enchanted the world with his charismatic papacy that stressed peace and justice. A true shepherd for the people, he captured the hearts of the faithful and championed interreligious dialogue. Facing a world torn apart by war and conflict, he united people around the globe with his message of love and warm teaching style.
All of this would have marked him as a great pope, but his greatest achievement would be the calling of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), which he called to bring the church "up to date" (aggiornamento). In doing so John XXIII ushered in a process that would forever change the church.
Discover anew the power of this inspiring saint's teachings today.

Even his attempts to clarify his thoughts in a diary fail to deliver him from worldly concerns. Yet somehow, despite his suffering, he tries to find love for his fellow humans and even a state of grace.

Story
In his first Encyclical, Pope Benedict helps to clarify the meaning of love. He examines the nature of various kinds of love—human love and divine love, eros, friendship, and charity. He writes beautifully and inspirationally of how man was made for love by the God who is love, the God who became one of us out of love—Jesus Christ.

Since Pope Benedict XV1 died he has had a remarkably good press. Indeed many have argued that there is a natural evolution between Pope Benedict`s mission and that of his successor Pope Francis. Here for the first time are assembled a collection of Pope Benedict`s most important public speeches and addresses. Dubbed and dismissed by many as an unrepentant traditionalist, we now see a man of profound intelligence and wisdom on matters relating not just to religion but to what is not termed ` The Common Good`.

In possessing those attributes, he is viewed by many to be similar to Pope Francis today. Like Pope Francis, Pope John was wont to stroll about Rome by night and make pastoral visits to sick children and prison inmates.

Story
Elected to the papacy at the age of 76, Pope John XXIII was to have a brief but important reign. Although he had a doctorate in theology, his gifts were pastoral, reaching out to the people of the Church. Vatican II, which he convened, brought forth the idea of a church as a community, in which all God's people are a sign of redemption for the human race. Cahill, in his short biography, gives us a sense of the enduring importance of John XXIII's idea.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

An incredible telling of an incredible life
These lectures provide a remarkable overview of one of the most influential human beings in recent history. With the Catholic Church comprised of over 1 billion people, and it’s positive influence much beyond that, Pope Saint John XXIII lived at an apex of history and social change that was global. But far from being an observer, there by happenstance, he was a key actor who launched a rich and beautiful renovation of Catholicism which has had universal impact for the good of all humanity.
