About this listen

Georgia O'Keeffe, one of the most original painters America has ever produced, left behind a remarkable legacy when she died at the age of 98. Her vivid visual vocabulary, sensuous flowers, bleached bones against red sky and earth, had a stunning, profound, and lasting influence on American art in this century.

O'Keeffe's personal mystique is as intriguing and enduring as her bold, brilliant canvasses. Here is the first full account of her exceptional life, from her girlhood and early days as a controversial art teacher to her discovery by the pioneering photographer of the New York avant-garde, Alfred Stieglitz, to her seclusion in the New Mexico desert, where she lived until her death.

And here is the story of a great romance between the extraordinary painter and her much older mentor, lover, and husband, Alfred Stieglitz.

Renowned for her fierce independence, iron determination, and unique artistic vision, Georgia O'Keeffe is a 20th century legend. Her dazzling career spans virtually the entire history of modern art in America.

A great lesson in who she was

I've always been a fan of this incredible woman. This book gave me even more to love about her. When a book is so good that it has you researching the things it's telling you, you really feel like your getting a great history lesson and going on a journey with the writer.

Glorious

What a glorious capture of this life of hers. I didn’t want it to end! Exquisitely detailed and vivid. The reader’s voice perfectly calming and gently punctuated when necessary. A total 100% experience, thank you.

Disappointment

I was delighted in the beginning, reading about young Georgia as an artist. But disgusted when she gave up teaching to live with a married man. And then become very rich. I realize now why so many people are skeptical about the art world. Even her “work ethic” seems alienating to me. She worked very hard. But I would have liked to seen her relax more. Live more. Money, in excessive amounts, is not everything.

Excellent

Well written and very interesting, held my attention throughout. It Definitely is a thorough biography not just of her life but of her response to her life and the people in her life which gave the reader an idea of the character of this complex and fascinating artist. If you want to learn about Georgia Okeeffe. This book will not disappoint.
