About this listen

Trust has a price. Love demands payment in full.

Emma Brown has a dangerous secret. As an unlicensed physician in 1840s London, she risks everything to save lives, performing surgeries that push the boundaries of medicine. But when a mysterious stranger appears in her cemetery one night, she never imagines that helping him will lead to her undoing. Now, with her research stolen and her practice threatened, she must decide if she can trust the man who betrayed her—even as her heart refuses to let him go.

Everett Moreland has a duty to uphold. Sent to investigate rumors of an illegal surgeon, he never expects to find a brilliant, passionate woman who challenges everything he believes about medicine. As he falls deeper under her spell, he's torn between protecting his family's interests and shielding the woman he's grown to love. But when a deadly conspiracy emerges that threatens thousands of lives, he must choose between loyalty to his father and the truth that could destroy them all.

Together, they uncover a web of corruption that goes deeper than either imagined. With time running out and lives at stake, they must decide if their fragile trust can withstand the price of truth—and if love is worth the cost of redemption.

I loved this story for the realistic feel of the characters and the story. Cholera was a common problem during this time period and the medical community were slow to understand its origins.
Dr. Brown’s studies, her threats to others wishing to ignore her findings, and even her reactions and theirs felt believable.
While trying to protect her, Everett, her husband risked losing her.
Love isn’t always clean and neat, sometimes it’s accepting each other’s flaws, even when it is their strengths that are their weaknesses.
