This is Book Two of the Whims of Fae series. Book one was an introduction to the Summer Court and it's two princes. This book takes us into the UnSeelie Night Court. Kalem, the Night King, agrees to teach Scarlett how to use magic but he has some ulterior motives.
Overall, I like the series so far. These books aren't terribly original, but if you're in need of some Fae Fantasy it will get you over the hump. The books aren't so serious that you finish feeling depressed nor are they that annoying immature tone. The author has a good mix to pull in both younger and mature audiences.
There are some additional characters added and I think they will have a good impact on how the series develops.
Unfortunately for me, the Bad-Boy Fae really isn't that Bad. Just another misunderstood young ruler. (You'll have to read to see what I mean.)
My annoyonce:
I HATE when characters just conveniently get a new power at the last minute. Example - "She couldn't explain how she knew what to do, but as if it were as simply as breathing she..." used this new power. I dont want to spoil what the power is going to be but just know it comes out of no where. 😒 Isn't that convenient... she gets a new superpower just as she is about to be beaten.
I dont understand why these "Kings" and "Queens" of the Fairie court are so weak. There is nothing that the author gives or describes about them that makes them seem powerful. They aren't anymore powerful than the other Fae the encounter through the series. On top of that, the two summer kings have never had any formal combat training until two weeks before their battle. Three of the Five courts are ruled by individuals in their early 20s. For a species that are potentially immortal that's like giving the crown to a toddler.
The books are quick reads/listens. Only about 5 to 6 hours long. For me that's extremely short when books I normal listen to are about 12 hours long.
The narrator is Jesse Vilinsky and she does well.
3 Stars 🌟🌟🌟- Good Book. I like the overall concept and it was delivered well. Most common ranking for a book I enjoyed and look forward to the next.
