Professor Ableweather, an eccentric inventor, lives and works in an English Cotswold village. He has an assignment to create a Simultaneous Translation Machine that will revolutionize communication across cultures. He accidentally discovers it can also help connect with his dog and cat, who happily sing him their songs. With the assistance of Sam and Sarah, children at the village school, he discovers all sorts of other animals have their songs to share. This attracts the attention and concern of Mr. McChip, a local farmer and owner of a fast-food restaurant, and his friend Phil the Butcher, who decide they will have to put a stop to the Professor's experiment. Compassionate yet light hearted, it addresses the consequences of realizing that the animals around us have thoughts and emotions.
