About this listen

There are stories each generation can tell, but if the next generation isn’t listening, they will be lost. Sometimes you realise you are the last link in that chain, and it is up to you to preserve them. So that is what I aimed to do. Taking the lives of three of my extraordinary ancestors – the apothecary, the surgeon and man-midwife and the sea captain, I have woven a narrative around the people, places and events that I have discovered travelling from 1809 in Prussia to the end of that century in N. Ireland. Discovering the innovative medical training which was being developed in Berlin in the 1840s and learning how that translated to the practice of a small-town medic in Pomerania, was both revealing and addictive, especially when I had access to my ancestor’s handwritten archive material from that time. A distinguished surgeon and the first man-midwife in that area, he should have had an illustrious career, but that was tragically cut short. He left behind a young family and I followed his son who broke away and sailed the seas, eventually settling in N. Ireland. Discovering his notorious exploits were also a surprise. Handing over a box full of documents, files and folders left in my will to a distant cousin, who may or may not be interested in the family history, is not a guarantee of its perpetuity. Who is going to plod through all the research and notes I have made? So in order to ensure the information has a chance of being passed on and assimilated, I have constructed this story around the basic facts. I hope that readers, as well as my relatives, will enjoy finding out about my extraordinary ancestors as much as I did. Historical Fiction Surgery
