Introduction to Public Speaking “To clean teeth or scratch an ear a straw may serve a king, a man with speech and action is a higher kind of thing.” -Panchtantra The word communication comes from Latin 'Communicare.' It means to share, to impart, and to partake. Man has been doing this since the beginning of time. In communication we use all our faculties- speech, sight, hearing, feeling and smell. Communication, therefore, is the expression of thoughts or emotions through words or actions from one human being to another. Public speaking can be defined as the 'power of persuading.' If you have the fear of public speaking, you are not alone. It is called Glossophobia or speech anxiety of public speaking or of speaking in general. The word glossophobia comes from the Greek glōssa, meaning tongue, and Phobos, fear or dread. Public speaking is considered the greatest fear a person can, even greater than the fear of death. The greatest speakers were not born speakers they become speakers. These people have known stage frights. They too once were afraid to express themselves. Winston Churchill was a terrible orator when he started out. Charles De Gaulle worked for years on his delivery. Francois Mitterrand failed his orals at university because of stage fright. The art of public speaking is so simple that it is difficult. There is a false notion that in order to be a successful speaker one must have unusual natural talent in addition to further study. The greatest speakers of the world did not regard Public speaking as a blessing of nature, but they cultivated their powers of expression through persistence and hard work. Demosthenes’ is considered to be the father of Public Speaking. His well known oration “on the Crown,” is regarded as the oratorical masterpiece of all history. An inspiring story about Demosthenes tells us that at first he had serious natural defects to overcome. His voice was weak, he stammered in his speech, and was painfully shy due to the lack of confidence. He remedied these faults by earnest daily practice in speaking aloud on the sea shore, with pebbles in the mouth, walking up and down hill while reciting, and deliberately seeking occasions for conversing with groups of people. The famous Roman orator Cicero, whose eloquence was second only to that of Demosthenes, was a close student of the art of speaking. He was so intense and passionate by nature that he was obliged in his early career to spend two years in Greece, exercising in the gymnasium in order to restore his ill health. Learning to speak is like playing the piano, not everyone can be a virtuoso, but everyone can have certain level of proficiency. It is just a question of training. Everyone who speaks well in public makes it look like its natural talent. It is the same thing with dancing, singing, cooking or any other art or skill. It can be made to look natural with hours of effort. Do you want to improve your relationships, your ability to land and excel at jobs, your self-esteem, and even your health and happiness? Improving your communication and speaking with a book like this one can help with all these areas of your life. Life is a matter of choice and the choices you make will determine your future.
