 Ein entspanntes Leben in Italien fernab des kalten deutschen Winters - nur noch wenige Tage trennen den LKA-Beamten Max Quercher von der Erfüllung seines Traumes. Der letzte Auftrag vor seiner Frühpensionierung ist keine große Sache: Unter einem Baum in der Nähe des Tegernsees wurde eine Wachsleiche gefunden, die Identität des Toten ist bekannt. Quercher soll nun die Enkelin des Verstorbenen - eine reiche Amerikanerin - zum Fundort begleiten und dafür sorgen, dass der Leichnam in die USA überführt wird.

Doch vor Ort entwickelt sich die scheinbar einfache Angelegenheit zu einer Geschichte mit ungewissem Ausgang. Denn ausgerechnet der Mann, der die Wachsleiche gefunden hat, kommt bei einem vermeintlichen Arbeitsunfall ums Leben. Der Schreiner soll sich selbst mit seiner Säge enthauptet haben. Quercher zweifelt an dieser Version des Geschehens und beginnt zum Unmut der einflussreichen lokalen Politprominenz, die Vergangenheit der Dorfgemeinschaft zu durchleuchten. Als er Indizien für einen gigantischen Immobilienskandal findet, haben sich seine Gegner längst formiert. In der Thomasnacht geht es für Quercher nur noch ums nackte Überleben...
