Publisher's summary

"This book has the important element that is missing in most of the books and articles on Garvey - a political analysis of what the Garvey Movement was about." (John Henrik Clarke, The Black Scholar)

A classic study of the Garvey movement, this is the most thoroughly researched book on Garvey's ideas by a historian of Black nationalism.

A Rich and Compelling Study by a true Garveyite

The late Tony Martin's work here in 'Race First' is one of the most insightful and, at odd intervals, depressing investigations into the life and times of Mr. Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr. According to some, this is the most comprehensive research on the Ideology of the Negro Improvement Association and it's creator.

There were several times where I had to take a break from listening. Hoping to go straight through to the end, I came across too many reported setbacks that befell the great man. Initially, I thought they were overkill by the author, but soon realized that he had only sought to provide us with the proper context of struggle. The dedication by white supremacy (undaunted, hitherto even), other jealous rivals, and political opportunists did whatever they could to detract from his worthy cause of self determination.

RACE FIRST, is a title that will no doubt have been misinterpreted by so many; which will inevitably justify their own jaded perceptions of Mr. Garvey and his failed Movement. A more precise title might be 'Racial Love for Self First' as opposed to the modern day Multi-culturalism which seems to have only been spoon-fed to people of Afrikan descent. I've learned so much about Mr. Garvey, the author, and even about myself. White Supremacy is a big problem. One might come to believe that it is THE problem. That being said, this book was written for no one else other than Afrikans, on the continent and in the diaspora. Dear reader, If you've come across this title, please stop and consider.
