About this listen

Turns out there are monsters in the world.

Why couldn't my midlife crisis involve a new hairstyle? I went from ordinary working gal to demon killer. Sounds exciting? Not really, seeing as how I got fired from my job, my apartment was trashed, and the cops think I'm involved in something shady.

Especially that cute detective who keeps questioning me . . .

Pity there's no time to flirt, what with all the demons that keep emerging from sewer grates and subway tunnels. Something has to be done before they overrun the city. If only that something didn't involve me!

I never asked to be a heroine, but apparently, I've been chosen and now I must reap what fate has bestowed before chaos is sown.

Contains mature themes.

Fantastic!

I absolutely loved this! It’s my first book by this author and I can’t wait for book 2. This book had action, humor and so much paranormal fun!

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this books performance. The narrator's various voices easily distinguished the different characters. The story had such wonderful world building that I could see the fog and the castle as if I was there.

Crisp, Smart and Excellent

It only took less than a minute to realize that I had a gem to listen to. The writing is excellent, love the MC and top tier narration. My only complaint is the length .. something many of us feel for a really good book - never long enough.

Bland listen made worse by Elon Musk reference

This was a forgettable mishmash of random plots, thinly sketched characters and uninspired threats. Sadie is 42, but after the opening chapter that fails to signify. Demons attack again and again with tons of red shirt deaths, but there’s no real sense of danger (like when they find an entire apartment building of the dead and Sadie’s first thought is for the loss of her favorite jeans).

Reapers can see demons but witches can’t, yet witches have magic to kill demons but Reapers don’t have magic …so witches blindly throw spells while Reapers kill with their scythes… or something. The world building seemed forced and convoluted.

And then, around the halfway mark, there’s this random mention of E Musk being a reaper. This would have been unremarkable in 2024, but listening in 2025, it was like a fart bomb exploded in my ear buds, tainting this already bland listen. When the last half hour finally brought a demon with dialogue, I resented the info dump where it blabbed the entire evil plan, explained Sadie’s importance and then needlessly sexualized things by having the demon groping and leering.oh, and Sadie’s potty mouth didn’t exactly class up the listen. I see this book is available as a 1-3 book collection, but I’ll be stopping here.
