About this listen

On Recruitment Day in the year 2042, Kress and her seven fellow Seventeens—including her best friend, her worst enemy, a brilliant strategist, a moody recluse, a trigger-happy killer, a timid giant, and the impossibly handsome boy she’s avoided all her life—are taken away by armed soldiers to aid in the fight against the invading Eastern Order. But what does preparing for war have to do with the disappearance of Kress’s father? Or the strange pattern of techno-genetic tattoos embedded in her forearms? Or her growing psychic connection with Render, her mysterious raven companion?

In a secret facility called the Processor, Kress and her fellow Recruits are subjected to endless weapons training, violent puzzles, dangerous war games, deadly escape rooms, and impossible Virtual Reality simulations. In the end, they’ll get answers to questions they’ll wish they never asked.

Not bad

I enjoyed the story overall, but it could've done the same thing in probably half the pages. Worth the listen though and I will be listening to the rest of the series.

Fast paced dystopian story

I’m always a sucker for a good post-apocalyptic or dystopian story. It had the usual tyrannical government and secrets to be discovered along the way. I enjoyed following the journey of the main character, Kress, finding herself and her value. At times the story was a bit clunky, transitions were abrupt and feelings and abilities developed suddenly with no warning or development. Then again, I appreciate an author who doesn’t feel the need to spell it all out for you. I ended the book with many questions, and I assume those will be answered in subsequent novels. Janelle did a great job of reading, and I look forward to listening to other books she has read.

Was ok

Nothing that exciting happened but it was fine. Couldn’t take it very seriously. It was a bit confusing as to what happened when why a five-year-old would know all these things about the pre-dystopia world when they grew up as a teenager. The story arc is fairly clunky. I only made it halfway through book 2, which just dragged out.

Pretty good

It’s almost like a mix of divergent and the hunger games. The Voice is slightly slow, but you get used to it and the story is really good. It’s not too romantic, but it still has hints of it. And there’s plenty of action and interesting things.

Editing

This really could have used an edit for military background and context. Not a bad storyline, but I couldn’t finish it.

Felt like a rough start - deceptively though

The start of this trilogy was deceptively shallow. Keep with it. At the end, you’ll be grateful that you did. My only judgment is that it feels like the book starts in both chapter one and chapter eight. But it kept me plugged in enough that I already bought book two! Clever is the word I’m looking for. I promise you it is worth sticking with it.
