About this listen

The direct sequel to the Hugo Award-winning novel Cyteen, Regenesis continues the story of Ariane Emory PR, the genetic clone of one of the greatest scientists humanity has ever produced, and of her search for the murderer of her progenitor - the original Ariane Emory. Murder, politics, deception, and genetic and psychological manipulation combine against a backdrop of interstellar human societies at odds to create a mesmerizing and major work in Regenesis.

Who did kill the original Ariane Emory? And can her personal replicate avoid the same fate? Those questions have remained unanswered for two decades since the publication of Cyteen. Now, in Regenesis, those questions will finally be answered.

A delightful book

I just listened to this book for the 10th time. I start with cyteen then regenesis. What I like is that there are some words I don’t know. I delight in the scientific and the characters built in both books.

Great story poor narration and editing

AUDIBLE NO LONGER ALLOWING RETURNS ON AUDIO BOOKS PURCASHED WITH CASH LISTEN TO SAMPLE BEFORE PURCAHSE!!

I read some of the reviews, but didn't anticipate just how bad the narration and sound editing are. Within sentences, every few words, there are completely different sounding narrations both in volume, tone, and "echo", sound much louder and with noticeable/strange echo quality, that are incredibly distracting. Nouns and names are pronounced differently from previous book. Why did the narrators not listen to even a small sample of previous book to pronounce things the same? CJ Cherryh is my favorite author and I'm excited to get to the audio books on audible, but this one is pretty bad. Listen to a sample first before purchasing. I purchased this a couple other CJ Cherryh books without much concern as Audible has always allowed returns if I didn't like the book. No longer. Unknown to me, Audible changed its return policy in October so that books purchased with cash are no longer returnable. I got this audiobook at a discount because I owned the kindle version so could get it cheaper for cash than the cost of purchasing a credit to then purchase it. This policy will ultimately lead me to purchase no more books than my yearly subscription of credits because I don't want to take the change on getting another poorly narrated book.

More, please!

After reading Cyteen several times, and a long wait for this sequel, it definitely didn’t disappoint. There were significant twists and unexpected turns, new discoveries and clarification on details. But at the end, still questions. Old questions, new questions. Who was responsible for the murder of Ari 1? Why did Denis try to kill Ari 2? What does Kyle know? What will the worm in the Gehenna azi sets do? Will there be a next book? One can only hope.

It's Alright

Smart prose that gradually unveils itself as a sort of inverted harem fantasy. The political elements are well considered but a bit of a bait-and-switch from the core relationship issues that really drive this series. In short we have a cop out from a writer who is capable of better.

Great story continuation

The continuation of the story was great! I was disappointed with the narration changing how things were pronounced at the beginning. You could tell when the narrator made an error and they re-recorded parts. It was annoying at first, but I got past it because the story was so great.

good ending for the Cyteen series but a little dry

I'm glad to have an ending to the story, but the book was a little tedious compared to its predecessors.

Read Alliance/Union/Compact 1997 and Earlier First

If you are a fan of circular arguments and general repetition; if you enjoy feng shui or are a fan of The Sims, dive right into this book. Otherwise I suggest reading all the pre-1998 Alliance/Union/Compact novels first. A lack of assertive editing and some well-deserved end-of-career fantasy fulfillment will not stop you from reading absolutely anything Grand Master C.J. Cherryh puts out. Both Gene Wars books are good but save them for after Regenesis. Finally, read the Foreigner Series and save the Hinder Stars novel(s) for last.

I missed Gabra Zackman as the main narrator: she really made Cyteen quite special. While Jonathan Davis is a fine narrator in his own right, two vastly different production qualities are cobbled together into this volume; the effects are quite jarring. C.J. Cherryh and Jonathan Davis should insist that this novel be re-recorded.

Too long, bad editing

The first hour or so is poorly edited. Parts were re-recorded and spliced together which is very distractingly obvious due to different tone and sound. Acoustically, it’s very jarring and confusing as it make you think the speaker is switching characters.

If you can get past the first hour, there is little action until the last few hours end. Most of the book is spent ruminating in the character’s own heads. It moved very slowly and all of the internal monologue has little barring on the actual story line.

Tedious

Too verbose and mired in individual thoughts normal people would take for granted. Tedious to follow.
