Maybe my dislike of this series is exacerbated by my love for Hobb's Elderlings series. Either way, I was extremely disappointed. By the time it started to get good, the last book was over. However, I would be willing to give Soldier's Boy another chance if Hobb were to revisit this series.

I hated almost all of this trilogy.

What did you like best about Renegade's Magic? What did you like least?

The core story of this series is good, but it could have been told in a single novel. As a trilogy, it was filled with words and thoughts that were repetitive and did nothing to advance the plot. It became VERY tedious.

If you’ve listened to books by Robin Hobb before, how does this one compare?

This book and series is my least favorite of Robin Hobb's works. In fact, I believe that had I not read it last, or enjoyed her other works so much, I may have liked this series better. In my opinion, it simply did not measure up.

Would you listen to another book narrated by John Keating?

Yes, the narration was the best part of this particular series.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes. In fact, I think a movie version of the series would do better justice to the core of the story than the books, which were repetitive and filled with words that did nothing to advance the plot. A movie would cut through all that. One movie could easily cover the entire trilogy and do a better job telling the story.

Waaaaaay Too Long!

Over all I enjoyed the trilogy of books and even in some ways how the story was dragged out. The dilemma that the main Character faced Was overwhelming at times and How to resolve The situation was Not something that could just be Thrown together but But had to be developed in a way That would be convincing to the reader.
I have always enjoyed Robin Hobb's writing and story telling and John Keating is an excellent narrator with a good range of Character voices.

Took along time to get there

Navarre experienced more trials and tribulations than any single person should have to experience in several life times! He so deserved what he received.

Great way to wrap up the series

Another rousing series by epic fantasy writer, Robin Hobb. And when I say epic, I mean epic. She crafts a fully-integrated world, with not one, but two fully-realized peoples, cultures, histories, magics, and mythologies, and touches briefly enough on a third to give readers a glimpse into the swirling depths of the mind of a creative genius. She takes the reader/listener on a terrific and, occasionally, terrifying journey, and the intensity of it will take your breath away. Occasionally a bit of a slow read, it nevertheless is a rich piece of storytelling. The narration is beautifully done, with a few exceptions - places where the voices are inconsistent with the emotions described, etc. Nevertheless, John Keating does a magnificent job with giving each character a distinct voice, his own voice melodic in the telling of this fantastic tale.

Just as a caution: Read/listen to these books in order. It is a trilogy, and while it is, in theory, possible to read and understand them as separate entities, you would lose the massive arching story and many of the subplots and foreshadowings that are present right from the first page through the last (yes, quite literally. Mz. Hobb is, in fact, a genius when it comes to wrapping stories back around to their beginnings). Shaman's Crossing/Forest Mage/Renegade Magic, for those curious. Happy reading!

Epic. Need I say more?

Great ending!

Really enjoyed the first two books but struggled to finish this one. Soldiers Boy may have deserved a story but I just didn't enjoy it as much as the first two.

Soldiers Boring
