About this listen
Every book sold helps save a life.
A portion of profits goes directly to Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue — the same rescue at the heart of this award-winning story.
4,000 Dogs. One Garage. No Backup.
When Deputy Keith Benning took a job in rural North Dakota, he never imagined his garage would become ground zero for a grassroots animal rescue movement. But with 70+ strays showing up each month and no local shelter in sight, Keith and a ragtag team of volunteers stepped up.
Over four years, they rescued thousands of animals — and sacrificed everything to do it.
A True Story of Grit, Purpose, and Radical Compassion
💥 An award-winning, real-life animal rescue memoir
🐾 For readers who love Oogy and The Art of Racing in the Rain
📚 A must-read for animal lovers, rescue advocates, and those who believe one person can make a difference.
He lost his marriage. A fellow officer. Nearly his own life.
But in the face of burnout, heartbreak, and impossible odds, Keith proved that one determined human — and a garage — can spark a revolution.

Story
Did you know that the remora fish will try to swim up a whale shark's butt when they poop? The crew of Twig didn't. It turns out there was an awful lot the family of five didn’t know when they decided to move aboard and set off for adventure on the high seas. After decades of dreaming, and planning, the explorers finally sailed off into the sunset. Yes, they found the palm trees and coconuts they had longed for, but they also glimpsed the other side of paradise. They ran from waterspouts, dodged hurricanes, got (sort of) robbed by pirates, and played chicken with naval warships. They ...

In the six lectures of The Great Gatsby at 100, you will join Sheila Liming of Champlain College to revisit the context and culture of the Roaring ‘20s, which inspired the story of the mysterious Jay Gatsby and his disastrous pursuit of Daisy Buchanan. As you’ll discover, while Gatsby is framed as a love story, it’s also a story of the American experience, revealing the unspoken rules of wealth and class and the false promises of self-made success in a world of Old Money privilege.

Story
First came the boom - the loud, deep, unapologetic bellow that seemed to erupt from the very core of the Earth. Eerily, the majestic high-rise slowly leaned to the south. On the 78th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower, no alarms sounded, and no one had information about what had happened at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001. Blind since birth, Michael couldn't see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and his guide dog, Roselle.

Story
April 7, 1944 - This date marks the successful escape of two Slovak prisoners from one of the most heavily-guarded and notorious concentration camps of Nazi Germany. The escapees, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled over 100 miles to be the first to give the graphic and detailed descriptions of the atrocities of Auschwitz. Originally published in the early 1960s, I Escaped from Auschwitz is the striking autobiography of none other than Rudolf Vrba himself. Vrba details his life leading up to, during, and after his escape from his 21-month internment in Auschwitz.

As a young man, Randall Woodfield had it all; he was a star athlete with good looks and an award-winning student. Working in the swinging West Coast bar scene, he had more than his share of women. But he wanted more than just sex. An appetite for unspeakable violent acts led him to cruise the I-5 highway through California to Washington, leaving a trail of victims along the way. As the list of the dead grew, the police mobilized to stop a twisted killer who had 44 known deaths to his name.

Love the story of this wonderful group.
An emotional roller coaster depicting the reality of rescue. I follow them on FB and look forward to the nightly live videos.
My only disappointment is the AI narration. This is the ONLY virtual voice book I have ever listened to and only because of TMAR. If they reissue with a person reading then I will definately purchase again. I'm hoping a sequel is in the works.

A gripping story of how TMAR started
TMAR holds a special place in my heart. I have followed and volunteered tor years. This book helps you understand the beginnings and some of its evolution. It helps you understand the community they serve and you hear the stories of many animals from the beginning. You can feel the dedication and passion that Keith Benning and his crew of volunteers have for animal rescue. This book takes you from operating out of a house to the garage and shows the growth of the rescue over the first years. I cried at the wins of lives saved and the losses of those that we were too late for or didn’t have room for. This book is well narrated and you can enjoy this story while you’re cleaning your house, out for a walk or driving. Come along with TMAR and get pulled into our story. There’s so much more to come!

Dogs. Because people suck. Audiobooks. Because reading is hard.
This is one of my all time fav books and I was so excited to see it’s now an audiobook! I was suprised how good it was for being AI narration. As a full time house keeper I listen to a ton of audiobooks. This was the best AI narration I’ve heard and actually better than some audiobooks read by humans. Full cast of voices too! I’ve read this book 3 times but I still learn something new and am reminded why rescue matters. CJ is the reason I am proud to own a TMAR pup of my own. Thank you CJ for telling such an important story and inspiring me to be on the right side of history. 🩷
