About this listen

In this book you'll learn how your mind works when thinking about stressful situations. New information from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Relational Frame Theory (RFT), show how your mind works like a computer when processing stressful information. ACT is a form of psychology based on cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). ACT is grounded in mindfulness and is a values-based form of therapy. The main goal of ACT is to help people live in ways that are more consistent with their values. ACT teaches people how to set values-consistent goals and take action towards meeting them. RFT and ACT compare your mind to a computer that is running multiple programs simultaneously 24/7. For example, as you read this page your mind is also listening to sounds in your environment, processing sensory inputs (changes in lighting, temperature and smell etc), and even daydreaming without you even being aware of it. Your mind never stops; you couldn't even turn it off if you wanted to. While the computer might run an operating system program, virus checker, word processing program and others, the mind's programs are thoughts, personal scripts, mental images, and emotions. When computers and the human mind function well they are capable of amazing feats. When they don't function well even a small problem with one of the programs can wreak havoc on everything. Sometimes one of the computer programs that is running malfunctions and causes the whole system to freeze. When this happens everything gets stuck, nothing works, and the only way to fix it is to reboot the computer. As with computers, sometimes one of the mind's programs malfunctions, and causes the mind to get stuck and freeze. At times everyone gets overwhelmed with troubling thoughts and painful emotions. When this happens it is very difficult to think clearly, focus on the task at hand and attend to daily tasks and responsibilities. One of the reasons it is difficult is that the mind, if allowed to, can endlessly ruminate on troubling thoughts and personal scripts, frightening mental images and painful emotions. This book will show you how to slow down your runaway mind, calm your troubling thoughts and painful emotions, and move forward towards your values-consistent goals.
