About this listen

Warning: Not to be listened to after dark.

For years, Old Gregory has been the Spook for the county, ridding the local villages of evil. Now his time is coming to an end. But who will take over for him? Twenty-nine apprentices have tried: some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive.

Only Thomas Ward is left. He's the last hope; the last apprentice. Can Thomas succeed? Will he learn the difference between a benign witch and a malevolent one? Does the Spook's warning against girls with pointy shoes include Alice? And what will happen if Thomas accidentally frees Mother Malkin, the most evil witch in the county?

I have read the book many times and its still a great read. The narrator did a great job making you feel for the characters and set up the scenes.

Great story

The story isn't too complex and that is okay. Not everything needs to be it reminds me of the Vampire's Assistant series meets Harry Potter. Nothing new and not really scary more fun. Easy to like.

Enjoyable YA Book

The musical intermissions between the chapters or parts are too long it would be better to take those out and go a head and move forward with the story

Really liked the narration especially for The Spook. I grew up with all these books decorating my shelf and it's so nice to listen to them all again. Five stars!

I actually bought this book on my kindle first- but the dialect used by the characters was a little distracting and I had a really hard time getting past the fist ten percent. Last night I decided to download the audio book while at work since I had gotten to a particularly sad part in The Return of the King and I needed a break. I am so glad I did. The narrator really brought this to life. I listened all night and I really didn't want to go to sleep this morning. He did a marvelous job with consistency so you always knew which character was speaking. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series and possibly listening along. I wish this was an immersion read so I didn't have to catch myself up by flipping through so many pages. It was worth the extra trouble though. This is a fun story. It has memorable lines such as the fathers advice on women. I highly recommend this if you need a quick walk through a fantasy world.

I purchased this book for a long trips with
children in the car. I enjoyed it so much
that I purchased the next two books. This is
a great book for children 10 and up - and for
adults as well. It was well read, easy to follow and a bit scary.
