About this listen

Inception meets The Magicians in this wildly imaginative story about what happens when the secret worlds people hide within themselves come to light.

All Kane Montgomery knows for certain is that the police found him half-dead in the river. He can't remember anything since an accident robbed him of his memories a few weeks ago. And the world feels different - reality itself seems different.

So when three of his classmates claim to be his friends and the only people who can tell him what's truly going on, he doesn't know what to believe or who he can trust. But as he and the others are dragged into unimaginable worlds that materialize out of nowhere - the gym warps into a subterranean temple, a historical home nearby blooms into a Victorian romance rife with scandal and sorcery - Kane realizes that nothing in his life is an accident, and only he can stop their world from unraveling.

I love the characters, and the development they show is amazing! I also think the author did a great job with the lgbt representation throughout the book. Michael Crouch is by far my new favorite narrator. I’ve listened to other books with him and I feel he really connects to the characters, and conveys their emotions amazingly well. I loved the funny moments, and the plot twists were really surprising at times. All around I think this was a great read and I will definitely reread this many more times.

Definitely a new favorite

where wer these fatastical tales combined with gay romance when I was a kid. This story was well written and we'll performed. I loved the beginning, it stars right off the first page.

When I was young

Everything about this is amazing, I loved it so much in every way. The premise is something that resonates with anyone who craves the escape of books or shows or day dreams but reminds why it's important to remember other people still exist.

Great

i have a lot of things i could say about this book, but at the same time i don’t what to say. objectively the writing is gorgeous, the storytelling is lovely, and the characters are wonderful, but none of that seems all that important. for me, what it comes down to is that this book feels like home.

pretty much blown away

It took me a while to get into the story finding it tedious at times, I was just a little annoyed that it took 100 pages to get to the actual story, but from then on the story was a fascinating magical adventure filled with excitement and action-packed moments.

Kane is a really unlikable character in my opinion, at times he can be so self centered and rude but there was definitely some character development.

Adeline was one of my faves I felt so identified with her (she’s just so bitchy and sarcastic)

Ursula was just a sweetheart

Elliot I didn’t really connected with him

Dean from the beginning I knew he was more than just the new guy and of course I was right

Poesy ... whenever I picture her physically I see a mixture of Elton jones and Dolly Parton idk why lmao

It's been hard to find good queer books with gay male protagonists but this book stood out. It's very well written and I'm glad I found it. Genuinely I have no complaints, the book even left me wanting more of these characters and this story.

Very good book.

Ahh if only I'd had a book like this as a younger person. Ryan La Salla does an incredible job of rooting his fantastic world in his very real, very flawed characters. Long story short, if you liked "Carry On," "A Darker Shade of Magic," "Runebinder," or "The Magicians" series you'll probably dig this.

Loved it start to finish.

Really good story and plot line...at one point I thought there was no way all the elements would ever come together and the ending would not be able to satisfy the loose ends, but it did! it swirled them all into such a great conclusion!

Great story

this books is lovely and whimsical. it's been a while since I read a boom that had a well read story and done in a way that doesn't drag or that you don't find yourself hating a character cause the writing wasn't good. and Michael's portrayal of this world and how he vrought them to life kept me engaged the whole time

so good
