Publisher's summary

Fame and popularity breed envy in high places, and the adulation of the mob is fickle. They often take as much pleasure in tearing down the idols that they have grown tired of as they did in elevating them in the first place. It is safer by far to live unseen and unremarked, as I always attempt to do.

An ancient kingdom. An incredible destiny.

Taita is a humble slave, an expert in art, poetry, medicine and engineering as well as keeping important secrets. He is the most treasured possession of Lord Intef. Yet when Intef's beautiful daughter, Lostris, is married to the Pharaoh, Taita is commanded to follow her and swiftly finds himself deeper than he ever could have imagined in a world of deception and treachery.

But outside the palace, the great kingdom of Egypt is divided and in even greater danger. Enemies threaten on all sides, and only Taita holds the power to save them all....

The first audiobook in the epic Egyptian Series.

Outstanding performance!

I have read this book numerous times before, but it's an absolute pleasure to have it read to me by so great a performer. I'm very capable of bringing it to life in my imagination during my own reading, but Mark Meadows adds to the story with his own considerable talent. I highly recommend this book to everyone I discuss books with, and now I'll recommend this version as well.

Good if historically dubious

This was an entertaining story. However, some of the history was way off. I like historical novels to be accurate depictions of the time in which a story is set. but there was a lot that was correct there were some glaring inaccuracies as well.
Still it inspired me to research more about ancient Egypt. and there were a number of things that the book pointed out that I didn't know.

Suspense, romance and adventure

I've been putting off listening to this book. But I am so glad I finally got to it. It was amazing! It kept my attention the entire time. The plot is intricate and it is full of vivid and lovable characters.

An excellent read indeed

The books of Whilbur Smith always manages to completely transport me to another time. His vivid descriptions and works of fiction intermingled with just enough historic fact cultivates an immersive experience that makes the stories immensely enjoyable.

Read the paperback in one day.

Very few stories catch and hold my attention. This book was a grand read and I felt it not another run of the mill work of fiction.

Wonderful book

It took me a while to get used to the voice of Mark Meadows but I got used to it fairly quickly and I absolutely loved the story.

good character development

great storytelling and pulls you in to the world of ancient Egypt, without being historically accurate.

Historical fiction with a flair

Beautifully crafted, extensive tale that I would have happily given 5 stars except for the extensive descriptions of animal and human suffering.

What happened?

Not sure what I was expecting, but I didn't get it. There are some moments that are fun, but there's really nothing going on. The second book sounds like it might be the payoff I was looking for. However I'm not sure I am willing to take that chance.
