About this listen

AN INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER

Police Chief Jesse Stone investigates the mystery behind a dead body found strewn with photos of murder victims and placed on top of $2 million in cash, before a mob of hit men converge on Paradise.

Just another day in Paradise . . .

Chief of Police Jesse Stone is on his way home from a long shift when a call comes in for a welfare check on an elderly resident of the wealthy seaside town of Paradise, Massachusetts. Inside a house packed with junk and trash is a man’s dead body. It’s a sad, lonely end, but nothing criminal . . . until Jesse finds the photos of murder victims strewn around the corpse, on top of a treasure trove of $2 million in cash.

Jesse takes on the case and finds a trail leading to an aging mobster who will do whatever it takes to keep the past from coming to light. Before long, Jesse has a price on his head as hit men converge on Paradise to take back the cash and destroy any remaining evidence. But the real danger might be coming from inside his own department. Jesse Stone must unearth the truth buried under the wreckage of a dead man’s life . . . before he winds up in the ground himself.

Fast moving: easy listening

I love the Jesse Stone character and his sidekicks. Intriguing story with twists and turns but the writing manages to be compelling and without a lot of descriptive violence, foul language or grotesque imagery, often a wonderful change from other mysteries.

Dead Men Do Tell Tales

After a wellness check turns up a dead man in his hoarder filled house and $4M is discovered in the rubbish, Jesse has his hands full with a hot headed new hire who insults a local town leader.

James Naughton's narration is spot on.

Solid first attempt

I think this was a decent first book by yet another author taking over the Jesse stone novels. Would like to see a bit more character development from Jesse but overall it was a solid story. Little too focused on things/ppl who don’t seem to be at the core of these stories but I liked it and as always the narration was fantastic. Worth a credit

Trust your gut

I am a loyal follower of the Jesse Stone series; my deepest enjoyment is when Jesse follows his gut (in spite of all the background noise) in this offering his connection with other characters is either confused or non-existent. When his charisma with characters is disconnected it dilutes the richness of the story telling.

A good story well told.

I miss the humor that, Robert B. Parker infused into his writing. There were witticisms in, Parker’s work that were absent in this work. That ingredient gave RBP’s work a distinctive flavor. I look forward to it. Otherwise, the author captured the essence of the characters and was faithful to them.

This writer is unfamiliar with Jesse Stone.

This is the sole Jesse Stone novel that I found unenjoyable. The author’s lack of understanding of the character, particularly Jesse, is evident throughout the book. This lack of expertise in crafting Jesse Stone novels renders the author incapable of writing more of them, as they fail to grasp the essence of the character and the genre.

Shamefully unauthentic and disappointing.

Story started out following the Jesse Stone script that made this series loved and much appreciated by Parker devotees. However it quickly devolved into a farce leaving the listener to think they are listening to a 3rd rate attempt to copy previous Stone books. Previous authors who continued the series after Parker’s passing did a credible job and were enjoyable to read. Buried Secrets is a farce and should be avoided at all costs. I had to quit the book 3/4 though it. A HUGE Dissapointment.

Weak for a Jesse Stone book

I have read every Jesse Stone book at least once. The characters in this book are less developed than previous books and the story is just not as developed as one expects. The plot is a bit weak as well.

Many of the character’s behavior just does not make sense or is not consistent with previous books. A little social justice sprinkled through out the book also seemed a little out of character.

If you are a fan of the series, save your money.

This is a very poor effort with silly story lines and not of the same quality of previous books in the series. Please don't let this guy write any more of the Jesse Stone stories. I'm having a hard time even finishing the book. In fact I'm going to try and return this turkey.
