About this listen

Spenser investigates a case that hits dangerously close to home in this latest installment of Robert B. Parker’s beloved series.

Spenser is waiting out the latest Boston snowstorm when he gets word that Rita Fiore has been shot. Rita’s always been a tricky one: flirting with Spenser for years, she’s an ever-present figure that transcends friendship in Spenser’s circle. But at the end of the day, Rita is family. And family will always be protected.

Both a pit bull in the courtroom and provocateur outside it, Rita is no stranger to controversy. But as one of the city’s toughest lawyers, Spenser knows that there’s no short list of suspects who might want to enact revenge. With Rita’s life hanging in the balance, it’s up to him to get to the bottom of things, even if it means unearthing some unsavory secrets that might just lead him into an age-old game of lies and deceit.

Excellent narration

The narration Joe Montana does a great job with the voices of the various characters- easy to identify who is speaking.

Old school Spenser

The whole gang was here, including Hawk, Vinnie, Martin Quirk , Frank Belson, Rita Fiore, Jesse Stone, Molly and Henry. And of course Susan Silverman and the newest incarnation of Pearl the Wonder Dog. The only missing members of the gang were Zeke and Cholo. Spenser does what he does best, being a general nuisance until the guilty party comes for him. I think what Mike Lupica gets right where Ace Atkins failed in my opinion was just the right amount of Susan Silverman. It felt like Atkins used her to fill too many pages and get the required word count. Joe Mantegna does his usual journeyman job with the narration. The only issue I have is when a series is around as long as this one has the main characters must be at least octogenarians and Quirk and Belson long past retirement if not decades in the cemetery already.

The many suspects named made the plot very confusing.

Meh, a meandering story. The pacing made me drowsy throughout. It reads like a spec script for a teleplay, with a few ups to keep one’s attention. Although well narrated, it never held my interest until the last three chapters. Disappointed, but hopeful the next book will be better.

Don't care how it ends - returning it unfinished

I realized that I really don't care how it ends - I REALLY don't care about the characters, it's just tedious. I love Joe Montegna as an actor, but his reading leaves a lot to be desired. All in all - waste of my precious credits.
