About this listen

With absorbing power, Emory M. Thomas tells the story of one of the most revered figures in American history. A story of triumph and tragedy, this stunning biography provides a fascinating glimpse at the man behind the Civil War legend. Revealing the "whole" Lee in this enthralling, detailed saga, Thomas portrays him as a man driven by the paradoxes in his own personality. Here is the Lee who is both a legend and a man. Heroic and larger than life in battle; insecure and unfulfilled in private life.

Thomas presents the legendary general who inspired millions to support the southern cause, and the humble man who was amazed that thousands flocked to see him near the end of his life. This moving saga paints Lee on a canvas broader than the war that, for many, he has come to personify. Armchair historians and devoted Robert E. Lee buffs alike will enjoy this refreshingly candid portrait of an often honored historical figure.

Lee’s background and life before and after the war

The narrative flows and is easy to follow. I feel that I have a better understanding of the man. It seems to give a balanced account for the most part.

Must Read

if you want to read a balanced book on General Robert E Lee, I recommend this book. The author skillfully weaves the story of Lee, highlighting the qualities of that made him the man he was, and the life he led and his struggles and accomplishments. I wanted a book that provided an insight to the man, not the myth, this is that book. I feel I have a better understanding and insight of the man.

A good summary and helpful to see through the South’s eyes.

The whole toppling of confederate statues really made me want to learn actually who Lee was and understand the time and perspective of that era. I read GRANT A few years back And loved it but never read anything on the confederate side.

This was a good summary but at the same time the writer clearly engages in some idolizing and hero worship. Those few instances though are pretty easy to sniff out and the overall story is still fascinating and educational.

I now feel like I knew who he was and why he (and other confederates) did what they did through their own letters. Helpful in todays discourse.

Nice overview but superficial

Better than Wikipedia but less than one would expect from an historian. Too many subjects not addressed or only superficially. Author seems to idolize Lee. Wish I’d selected a different bio of Lee.
