About this listen

Navajo tribal cops Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito and their mentor, the legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, investigate two perplexing cases in this exciting Southwestern mystery from the New York Times best-selling author of Spider Woman's Daughter.

Doing a good deed for a relative offers the perfect opportunity for Sergeant Jim Chee and his wife, Officer Bernie Manuelito, to get away from the daily grind of police work. But two cases will call them back from their short vacation and separate them - one near Shiprock and the other at iconic Monument Valley.

Chee follows a series of seemingly random and cryptic clues that lead to a missing woman, a coldblooded thug, and a mysterious mound of dirt and rocks that could be a gravesite. Bernie has her hands full managing the fallout from a drug bust gone wrong, uncovering the origins of a fire in the middle of nowhere, and looking into an ambitious solar energy development with long-ranging consequences for Navajo land.

Under the guidance of their mentor, retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Bernie and Chee will navigate unexpected obstacles and confront the greatest challenge yet to their skills, commitment, and courage.

Always wonderfully written and read!

I started listening to the Tony Hillerman stories years ago, always delighted and always satisfied. Now I’m enjoying the continuation of more great storytelling with another great reader. Kudos!

Consistent!

Great recording, good story. Wish there was more about Navajo traditions. Not ridiculously complex making the story more believable. Thanks!

Loved it!!!

Loved the story. Hope to "read" more soon. Want to see more about Darlene's future & Chee & Bernie's beautiful relationship. The characters are all becoming more broad and interesting. Their personalities are key to the development of the story. Like the first time I read a book of Mr. Hillerman's, I will read every one of Anne's as well. (My mother had recommended Hillerman & after reading one, I bought every book he wrote & read them all in one summer!) Thrilled to see more of Leaphorn & Chee. Getting attached to Bernie as well. Thank you Anne, Liz 😍

A good Modern SW Native yarn

The story has current interest . The bad guys were a little stereotypical, but what can you do. The reading was quite good; the measured pace reflected the personal respect of the culture. I particular enjoy cultural detail and would have liked even more but this was well balanced.

From Bernie's viewpoint

Im really happy to have the Leaphorn/Chees' storyline continue with the dedication to details and description of 4 corners area. Storyline tilts in a good way towards Bernie's viewpoint and does not dissapoint! This is #2 in continuation series. I've enjoyed both and am starting the third. Great job! Dad would be proud!

Great atmosphere, awkward reveals

This is my first book by Anne Hillerman, though I have read all of the late Tony Hillerman's novels. AH delivers on the atmosphere of the Four Corners and the cultural richness of the Navajo, and for these alone I will read her other novels in the series. My only disappointment is with AH's reveals -- the truth about the crimes comes in a big rush without enough buildup and, perhaps, too many unknowns so that the reader doesn't feel the tension in the mysteries nor receive full satisfaction in the resolutions. I like Bernie. Love her Mom. Chi and Leaphorn are faithfully drawn from TH's template. I like the incorporation of contemporary dilemmas-- solar farms that endanger flora and despoil the landscape; caring for the elderly while maintaining a career; the claims of white people and Navajo to participate in the sacredness of the land. These are interesting and worthy themes that make AH's novel well worth the read. Excellent narration!

Good but not the excellence of Tony's.

Listened to all of Tony's which are outstanding. Book is ok. Narrator can't compare to George G.

Wonderful - Couldn't Stop Listening

Great book. Anne Hillerman's style is very much like her father's. I'm so glad she has continued the stories featuring Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, Bernadette Manuelito. Hillerman keeps you guessing about the mysteries with each chapter. As with her father's mysteries, the Navajo cultural references serve to make the reader feel a part the world of Leaphorn, Chee, Manuelito, and the other fascinating characters. Christina Delaine is superb as she changes her voice for each of the many characters. I can't wait to hear her next book!

Good read!

I love the complexity of the characters and the story line. Ann is carrying on and improving on her Fathers characters, making them her own. The well plotted story line and characters weave a wonderful mystery.
