About this listen

There is a sht ton missing from grammar books. Even my super advanced lexicon didn’t host all the nuance and downright nasty phrases common in the peninsula. One tries, but a master like Sisí has somehow managed to comprehend American and Mexican societies. As a native, I can see the few times he misses the mark slightly but, it was all in the range of believability, and perhaps a little pandering to the envy of Spaniards and Latinos. But still, the USA, a nation who has sold culture, family and religion for money, just might be the magnet needed for a vampire invasion.
I don’t like Sisí's voice. He sounds more like Speedy Gonzalez than the average Mexican campesino, but the narrator here is great. Álvaro has many great works under his belt. For a few pages, Sisí had me convinced that he is Mexican. That turned out to be my ignorance at play. He is, a genius, one who clearly understands how language creates culture and how to use language to invoke emotions, thoughts and perceptions.
The great power of his writing for Spanish students in the very high register is his sense of irony. He is a master of the finest colloquialisms which, at the same time, proving he can reach the highest formal registers when playing the narrator. The story will sicken some and repulse others. A graphic depiction of a throat being chewed out, however, pales comparatively, to his ability to play the harp strings of emotion over family loss and senses of despair and dread.
I don’t like vampire stories, and it will be difficult for me to continue the series for that reason. However, Sisí's writing style is something I would have missed and been the much poorer Spanish student had I not been blessed with discovering him. It's a wonderful, clean break from the Spaniard obsession of history and civil war, without stealing from Anglo sources. If Spain is going to compete in ground-breaking NEW whatever may come, I believe Sisí will be the one to do it with in the six providences lore of beasts and creatures the world knows so very little about. I hope he gets the idea and puts Spain in 1st place in Fantasy and Horror because I am sick and tired of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter!!! Whatever Sisí writes, I´ll buy just to support the arts, his art, of being a great writer. Masterful, however, typically the post Franco Spaniard, a little too intentionally blasphemous for my tastes. It would get old if I read it too much.

“Rojo” is an interesting and entertaining beginning to this creatures of the night story. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Recomendado.

Buenísimo. Entretenido
