About this listen

Jessica Fury, Washington lobbyist, has money, connections, and her own firm. But five years ago she had something better: happiness. Her firefighter husband, Quaid, was handsome, courageous, and crazy about her. Then one day he walked into a chemical inferno - and never walked out. Jessica has been through hell to get back on her feet. And then a rumor surfaces that could bring a miracle or shatter her world - again.

Q has been a prisoner forever. He's honed his mind and body into weapons. He's developed abilities no one else understands. But he's still at the mercy of a cabal of ruthless men, who blank his memory, test him like a lab rat, and tell him lies. Although his past has been erased and his future looks grim, instinct tells him he has a woman to live for. What his mind can't remember, his body can't forget…. The heat is on.

This is NOT the first book in the series

This is the first book that I've read in the Phoenix Rising series and I felt like I was thrown into a poop-storm with characters I should have known from the previous books and situations I should have been privy too. This is entirely my fault, but in my own defense my main mode of "reading" is with audiobooks and Audible didn't have any others in the series.

Even with being thrown into book three of the series, I enjoyed the story. I liked the premise of the series with each of the characters having special powers and I really liked the camaraderie displayed by the main characters in this book. I bet it would've been that much more fun to read about the previous main characters if I had known their stories from the past books. I also liked the evolution of one particular character just in the span of this installment and I look forward to seeing what comes of this person.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that some of the scenes seemed disjointed, seemingly written to conclusion out of convenience. For example there is a scene that I felt like the character's special power should've gotten him out of a situation because of the way his strength was described, however to up the angst in the scene the character needed to be captured and so he was.

Narration
Narrator: Gayle Hendrix
Performance: 3/5
Speed 1.25x
Hendrix did an alright job with the narration. There is a lot of sarcasm in this book and she delivers it pretty well. The distinction between the characters are good and the pace is just enough where while I listened at 1.25x the speed, it wasn't off.

doesn't make the grade

Would you ever listen to anything by Joan Swan again?

I tried a couple books in Joan Swan's paranormal series but found all to be too contrived for true enjoyment. In short I felt the books needed another round of plot/character development and editing to be ready for publication. There's a much good there, but ulitmately not enough for my enjoyment.

What three words best describe Gayle Hendrix’s performance?

Not my cuppa

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Rush?

Character names are straight out of marvel comics.

Was looking forward to continuing this series, but

Hard to tell how good the story was - or get involved with it - the narrator was so awful. The cadence and intonation only ever varied slightly and any dialogue didn't vary by character.
