Surya Dev and lord Shiva were also the primary deities revered by the protagonists of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Surya Dev is portrayed as Rama and Karna's spiritual father in the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Surya Dev also appears as a deity in Buddhist and Jain arts and literature. Surya or Ravi is the Hindu calendar's basis for Ravivara or Sunday. Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Samba Dashami, Ratha Saptami, Chath puja, and Kumbha Mela are major Surya Dev’s festivals and pilgrimages.
