About this listen

Joseph Sherman first visits Saigon, the capital of French colonial Cochin-China, in 1925 on a hunting expedition with his father, a US senator. He is lured back again and again as a traveler, a soldier, and then as a reporter by his fascination for the exotic land and for Lan, a mandarin's daughter he cannot forget.

Over five decades, Joseph's life becomes enmeshed with the political intrigues of two of Saigon's most influential families, the French colonist Devrauxs, and the native Trans - and inevitably with Vietnam's turbulent, war torn fate. He is there when the hatred of a million coolies rises against the French, and when the French Foreign Legion fights it's bloody last stand at Dien Bien Phu.

So sad that the French, Chinese, Japanese and the US were so horrible as to invade this country

An epic family tragedy set against Vietnam’s own tragic history. Wrought with emotion and well-researched, "Saigon" never sags despite its hefty story spanning fifty years. You brace yourself, as characters you’ve grown accustomed to fall. In the end, you’ll be exhausted, like the remaining characters, but satisfied. And Vietnam is a happier place now. It deserves it. Excellent narration by Gordon Griffin. He must have been exhausted, too. Thirty-five hours!

Having served in Viet Nam, I instantly got caught up in the story. Tragic characters and events abound. Much like the main character, I can't seem to get the place out of my mind.

Epic Story

I grew up during the Vietnam war, but I was too young to really understand what was going on. This book was an excellent way to understand the last two centuries of Vietnam. If you are interested in the French involvement in Vietnam, American involvement. Who Ho Chi Minh is. Why Vietnam is communist, or at least part of that history. All told with an interesting story centered around one man, who starts his Vietnam adventure on a hunting expedition as a young boy, and then has various jobs, sometimes in the military, sometimes not, that bring him in and out of Vietnam during critical points in history, if those things sound like something you would enjoy, this book is for you.

A beautifully crafted story that brought history to life...and opened my eyes to our real government during trying times. Sad.

The real story behind history of my own time.

I was suprised how quickly the 32 hours had passed. The story is wonderful, it coverst many aspects of the Vietnamese history and one can see the author’s great effort to be also historicly accurate and ballanced concerning this topic, as many English written literature offers only the USA view, especially on the Vietnamese war or the leadership of the North Vietnam.

Amazing story with real historical background

Mr Grey wrote a great story and Gordon Griffin narrated extremely well.
The author keeps it interesting; sometimes you may wish it was the real story of conflict in Vietnam.
I highly recommend it.

A very interesting story
