Sailing to Newfoundland documents a solo journey on a 40' sailboat from Florida to the remote and uninhabited fjords of the south coast of Newfoundland, one of the few places in the world where raw, unspoiled nature meets the ocean and provides sheltered anchorages. From the author of Becoming a Sailor, Journey to the Ragged Islands, and Chasing the Nomadic Dream, this book puts you in the cockpit, and in the fjords, and on top of glacier-cut mountains in the remote backcountry of Newfoundland.

I enjoyed this book, which could be appreciated on many levels. On the one hand, it is a guide to the stunning geography of the western half of Newfoundland's South Coast, as explored by sailboat. On the other hand, it is an interesting reflection of a solo sailor who shares almost every detail of his summer trip: what he eats, how he maintains his 41' sailboat, the weather he experiences, and even the geographic coordinates of his anchorages. You might say we are given a kind of audio reality show, in which an excellent sailor describes both his technique and even his breaks from sailing - for example, his hikes ashore, his fishing successes (and occasional failures), his editing of another sailor's book when internet is available, and the novels he reads when not preoccupied with other matters. This is not a comprehensive cruising guide to the province, but it would be a wonderful supplement for anyone who is considering sailing these waters - or that matter, sailing up the East Coast to get there. My only suggestion would be to have the reading done by a trained actor.

Sometimes a story is so simple, pure, and unvarnished that it can transport the listener to a place of peace. I am a "cliffhanger" junkie, and truth be told, I was not expecting a lot of suspense with this micro memoir. While there was an actual cliffhanger in this narration, there was never any sense of dread or suspense in this well-written sailing narrative.

I found myself with a strong dose of "sailing envy" as Paul took me along with him on this trip to Newfoundland. I joined Windflower and Stingray as well as these supposedly inanimate sea going vessels were given personalities of their own as Paul expresses love and appreciation through the language that he uses to describe them...like friends...family.

Paul doesn't wax overly poetic, even though he is indeed a poet. However, there was a brief moment, just a few sentences, when he was moved to acknowledge a divine creator that spoke peace to me. This narrative in some ways is simply an extension of that acknowledgement and gratitude.

If you had a drone and had it following Paul for this narrative, you would visibly see just one person...on a boat, or forging a new trail and hacking his way through a primordial Newfoundland forest with a machete just because they are there in front of him. This is in part a narrative of a man continuing to make peace with the world and helping us to feel that peace through a simple retelling of one of his solo adventures.

The truth is that you will get some good sailing tips, some insight into what it takes to be a single handed sailor. Heck, you will even join Paul as he does his version of Ahab chasing trout instead of a big white whale.

Enjoy this book for the pleasant ride that it is. I am looking forward to reading his other works.
