Somos seu povo e ovelhas de seu pasto, O profeta está falando daquela graça inusitada que levou Deus a separar seus filhos como sua herança, a fim de que pudesse, por assim dizer, alimentá-los debaixo de suas asas, o que é um privilégio muito mais excelente do que ser meramente nascidos como seres humanos. Qualquer pessoa estaria, porventura, disposta a vangloriar-se de ter sido transformada em um novo ser, sem sentir aversão ante a vil tentativa de roubar a Deus daquilo que lhe pertence? Todavia, a maioria dos homens não hesita reivindicar para si todo o louvor da vida espiritual. O que mais querem declarar os arautos do livre-arbítrio, senão dizer-nos que, por nosso próprio empenho, nós mesmos, filhos de Adão, nos tornamos filhos de Deus? Em oposição a isso o profeta, ao chamar-nos povo de Deus, nos informa que provém de sua própria boa vontade o fato de sermos espiritualmente regenerados.
