Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Wholesome, Exciting
This book is a historical work of fiction that focuses on the obstacles one must overcome while keeping the faith, and a deep love of God and family during The Great Depression. Adventure, romance, despair, and hope will all be experienced in this tale.
The author, Barbara Arnold Linkous, weaves an adventure-filled narrative around the historical Great Depression and its effects on people, places, and life. The research is extensive in this narrative as she accurately weaves the emotions, faith, and obstacles that people were forced to overcome and handle daily. Her characters were well-developed and flawless. While life was simple then, she accurately captures its complexity as well. Her dialogue was authentic and rich.
The narrator, Sarah Wadsley, delivers a strong performance, seamlessly immersing herself in the narrative and enhancing its emotions and sense of adventure. Her clear speech, paired with the right emotional tone and energy, adds to the experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, as it brought back many memories of stories shared by my parents and grandparents. It is truly a wholesome and enjoyable listen.

Very Enjoyable Listen
The life story of Sarah was very interesting and reflected not only life on the Bays Mountain but also life in general during that period of time. It was interesting historically. This book was different for me in its first person approach and a life story. I enjoyed it very much.

Enjoyed Learning About Sarah’s Life
I loved this audiobook! The narrator and the story. It started out with a tragedy and before Sarah was even born. I enjoyed learning about Sarah’s childhood and all the way to adulthood. Her family and the rest of the people in her world had a hard time. Matter of fact the Great Depression Era was hard on most everyone. They had to learn to survive and the Mountain people knew how better than most. I love historical fiction books and the ones that are true or based on truth are even better. A little sadness, a lot of struggles, and a whole lot of faith in God got them through the hard times. It’s such a blessing when people that have been through so much can still be faithful to God and family. Oh and let’s not forget the lesson in forgiveness in this story. It was amazing. If you like historical fiction you will probably enjoy this book. I recommend it.
I received a copy of this audiobook from the author but was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
