About this listen

Like the Tao Te Ching and the Bhagavad-Gita, this sacred text has guided the inner and outer lives of countless people in the art of living and the struggle for inner transformation. According to tradition, the words in The Dhammapada come directly from the mouth of Buddha. This translation in particular is among the most poetic and spiritually insightful. After it is read, Dr. Jacob Needleman presents his own essay, which compares Buddhism to other religions and explains the significance of The Dhammapada in Buddhism.Recording (P)1994 by Audio Literature; Copyright ©1976 by Thomas Byron Buddhism

Excellent in its wisdom

While The wisdom and sayings are excellent. The reader is dry, mono-tone, and will actually start to put you to sleep.

Excellence

Jacob Needleman is Jesus. This book is quite profound and he's also narrated a version of the Tao Te Ching (also found on Audible). His voice is an oasis and the teachings are Heaven. Must have.

Brilliantly Done

I have been studying Buddhism for 17 years. Whether you just beginning or like myself, the translation and reading is extraordinary.

Brief, but impressive

Listen to it once a week, @ speed 1.5. It is a type of meditation for me, where every new listen leads to new understanding and recognition of what was previously missed.

The best recording of the Dhammapada.

Needleman is a superb narrator for a beautiful translation. Poetic, swift, compelling, to be heard over and over again.

A Dhammapada That Speaks Directly to the Heart

This audio version of the Dhammapada is a personal, intimate one and speaks directly to the deepest level of the human heart as none of the more expensive versions I've read or sampled on Audible have thus far. Don't let the relatively short duration, low price tag and sparse fan fare fool you, this is a profoundly executed Dhammapada that is classic in simplicity and sticks to the essentials of the original text, skipping the commentary temptations that sound like a good idea, but on audio do not serve much purpose when reaching for a meditational aid like this.

Jacob Needleman has a penetrating voice that can move one to tears just from the poignancy and conviction of Needleman's personable, moving baritone delivery, which has the power to make the listener feel that he IS the Buddha at times. His voice sounds very compassionate as it reveals the timelessly fragmentary and simple recipe to inner peace.

Elixir to the soul

This should be our "modern mana", our daily bread. Its teachings and their profound truth are elixir to the soul.
