About this listen

In the early summer of 1962 in San Francisco, three inmates escaped Alcatraz. Presumed dead, they became the most famous escapees of that inescapable island. What if they survived? On that night there was an unusual heat wave and a calm tide. Perhaps even a stroke of luck. Cincinnatus Jones, the former Frank Lee Morris, is a man reborn. He finds shelter in a deserted cabin in the Oakland Hills. Among the Redwoods in a primordial forest, Cincinnatus finds an unfamiliar yet soothing solace while remaining alert, as he is still a fugitive. He starts painting the nature that surrounds him, imagining he will spend his days as a hermit in the Hills. And then she shows up.

Patsy Billie Vaughan, a schoolteacher for the Warden's and Officer's children on Alcatraz Island, is the owner of the cabin. Does she recognize her unlikely guest? Will she turn him in? Should he run? Cincinnatus makes his decision and then they come. Ghosts of California's railway days, pioneers of the environment, jazz and blues musicians of Oakland's Bottom. But when the four Birmingham Angels appear and later the Kent and Jackson State College students, Cincinnatus is broken open. Why him? He is a man who only wants his freedom. What are the dead trying to teach him and why should he care? Take this risky journey to freedom with Cincinnatus, a man who has never learned to trust or forgive, especially himself. Scape Ghost is the perfect escape.

WOW!!!

What an incredible journey into the 60’s this was. I thought I bought a book about hauntings, which are my favorite books, but this was different so I was a bit worried at first. But in just a matter of minutes, this has become one of my favorite books! I didn’t really understand a lot of this historical stuff but this book made me research more into the events. The author did such a great job intertwining her story with the past. Really, just WOW!! Also, the narrator did a great job which really added to this story coming alive. I highly recommend,

What a wonderful story. Magical, imaginative and grounded in the beauty of life.

Ms. Lagarenne surely knows how to spin a fine, magical tale. She had me wishing it was all true. I am getting the book so I can read this most excellent artwork in print. She also has me wishing for the Redwoods and Oakland and Berkeley; perhaps even a trip to Alcatraz? I won’t go as far as pouring myself drinks but Ms. Lagarenne has definitely whetted my appetite for coffee, good food and loving. Ms LaGarenne’s protagonist had me wishing I knew him for real. Listening to his inner voice through Joshua Macrae was also very believable and a true delight.

Keep writing Ms. Lagarenne. I eagerly await your next book.

My love of the east bay.

I loved it. I lived in East Bay and would go to San Francisco often. Have visited Alcatraz. So I picture all of it in my head. The reference to historic events took my breath away. I’ve read all of Nanci’s books. After each one I’m left waiting for her next.
