About this listen

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Second Sino-Japanese War, then pay attention....

Two captivating manuscripts in one audiobook:

  • The Second Sino-Japanese War: A Captivating Guide to Military Conflict That Began between China and Japan, Including Events Such as the Japanese Invasion of Manchuria and the Nanjing Massacre
  • The Rape of Nanking: The Nanjing Massacre That Occurred During the Second Sino-Japanese War

Many people in the West look upon the Second Sino-Japanese War, which took place in the 1930s and 1940s, as a sort of sideshow to the larger Second World War, but there is no separating the two. Imagine the Pacific War, the theater of World War II that took place in the Pacific. If the Japanese were not busy fighting on another front, they would have had millions of more troops available to fight the Americans and the British. In all likelihood, World War II would have ended the same way, but it would have taken much longer and cost that many more lives.

Some of the topics covered in Part 1 include:

  • The Roots of the Conflict
  • Japan Before the War
  • Manchuria/Manchukuo
  • China Proper
  • Another “Incident”
  • The Opponents
  • The Tragedy of Nanjing
  • They Were Expendable
  • The War Drags On
  • Horrors Mostly Unknown
  • Friends

Some of the topics covered in Part 2 include:

  • A Brief History of the Historically Important Chinese City of Nanjing
  • The Japanese invasion of China
  • The Marco Polo Bridge Incident
  • The Battle of Shanghai
  • The March to Nanjing
  • The Establishment of the Safety Zone
  • Western Perception and Reaction to the Massacre
  • The War Crimes Committed in Nanjing
  • The Far East Tribunal

The Chinese experience during WWII

Branded as the second Sino-Japanese war, this audiobook captures the Chinese experience during WWII, and the events leading up to it. The book begins with a brief, but informative history of China’s fall from being the wealthiest nation in the world to a lower or middle tier nation. It explores the relationship between China and Japan, along with the motivation behind Japan’s desire to conquer China, Korea, and much of East Asia.

As much of Asia was colonized by Western powers, Japan avoided this fate entirely, which gave it the financial and military wherewithal to expand beyond its traditional borders. It did so brutally in China, taking advantage of the weak and chaotic state China was in at the time.

If you would like to learn more about how WWII was fought in the Asian theater, with an emphasis on China-Japan, this is an excellent choice.

Who knew

As with so many other people, I was almost unaware of this part of history even though it is fairly recent in time. The impact of this war had to have played a very distinct part in how the Pacific part of WWII was played out. Very interesting history.

Very detailed and well done audiobook!

This audiobook details the history and motivation of Japan to invade China in 1931 and as many believe the start World War II.
It was particulary interesting to find out that Wuhan was a city that suffered terribly during the Japanese occupation. It also made one realize that because of Japans occupation of China it helped hasten the defeat of Japan in WWII.

2 books in 1

turns out this also includes The Rape of Nan King, which I've already read n reviewed.

the initial part of the project was really good and informative. only a couple of times I found myself "zoning out", but would often just rewind. I liked having a bit of a backstory in what led up to this war. mainly, it was just of the descriptions of weapons, etc, that I found dull.

overall, great work by Jason zenobia. he's probably my favorite narrator for CH. and great story
