About this listen

Paul hadn’t seen his wife for twenty years, so it came as a considerable shock when he was awoken in the early hours of the morning by the police to say that she was seriously ill in hospital and asking for him. He reached her side as she was dying and with her last breath she made him promise to find Sam. He asked who Sam was but by then she was past answering as death finally claimed her for its own. It was a puzzle that took an increasingly sinister turn as it became clear that others were also seeking the mysterious Sam as well, and they didn’t want any opposition. He soon became aware he was faced with a web of murderous corruption in which there was only one person he could trust: himself. But could he find mysterious Sam before he, too, joined his wife in the grave?

Extract. Harry spun round and fired wildly up in the direction of the loft. Even as he was firing Paul catapulted from behind the baler and rugby tackled him to the ground. It was a desperate struggle but an uneven one. Harry was bigger and stronger and far more used to rough-house tactics while Paul’s injured shoulder simply wasn’t up to the task demanded of it. Within moments the thug had thrown off Paul’s hold and wrestled him over and flat on his back. He still had hold of the gun but Paul had a desperate hold of the man’s wrist in a losing attempt to keep the gun from pointing down at him. There was a look of triumph on Harry’s face as his superior strength started to tell and the gun gradually moved round.

“I’m going to enjoy this,” he hissed in Paul’s face. “In fact I’m going to enjoy it nearly as much as disposing of that bitch of a wife of yours!”
