David Rakoff's best-selling collection of autobiographical essays, Fraud, established him as one of today's funniest and most insightful writers. Now, in Don't Get Too Comfortable, Rakoff moves from the personal to the public, journeying into the land of unchecked plenty that is contemporary America. Rarely have greed, vanity, selfishness, and vapidity been so mercilessly and wittily skewered.

Story
The inimitably witty David Rakoff, New York Times best-selling author of Don’t Get Too Comfortable, defends the commonsensical notion that you should always assume the worst, because you’ll never be disappointed. In this deeply funny (and, no kidding, wise and poignant) audiobook, Rakoff examines the realities of our sunny, gosh everyone-can-be-a-star contemporary culture and finds that, pretty much as a universal rule, the best is not yet to come, adversity will triumph, justice will not be served, and your dreams won’t come true.

Story
Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

Story
In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face—we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Story
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Creative Writing (and Reading) done well
This is a great selection of truly entertaining stories. I could not predict the outcome of a single plot - and my outbursts of laughter had more than a few people baffled on my flight home from Denver.
The readers are as great as the stories - whoever cast them was a genius. I also enjoyed the shorter formats (about 30 minutes each) which made room for enough details, but didn't drag things out. Do be prepared that there is some adult language in two of the stories, and some downright explicit situations in the last piece. If it weren't for the language in the last story (which was still a great story) I would have recommended this listen for all age groups.

Funny live recordings
This collection contains seven humorous short stories recorded live by Symphony Space. The live recording has the advantage that you can hear the audience's reaction, however, a couple of verbal errors crept in which couldn't be edited out.
My favorite stories in this collection are 'Chivalry' by Neil Gaiman, 'On the U.S.S. Fortitude' by Ron Carlson and 'Fatso' by Etgar Keret.

Wonderful Radio Show
These are stories read by for the most part by professional actors from a New York & LA public radio series. The match of readings and reader are always interesting. All of the stories in this offering are good, but "On the U.S.S. Fortitude" is absolutely delightful. The radio show is a weekly hour-long show featuring similar readings including classic as well as modern short stories. I'd love to see them provide a weekly subscription and some old compilations which they released on cassette, particularly a wonderful baseball compilation.

Funny stories, poor audio
These stories were entertaining, and in a sort of way I'm not used to - quite fun. The only downside I had to this recording was that the volume levels were so extreme I was constantly having to grab the volume knob on the radio in the vehicle while driving - from barely audible to blaringly loud.

Not funny.
I decided to give the "Lots of Laughs!"-series a second try, hoping that my first buy was just an unhappy coincidence. However, unfortunately, this book too is just not funny. I love Neil Gaiman and his story is the only one that I found sweetly funny, but the title "lot's of laughs" suggests something different to me. Sadly, most stories didn't even make me smile, let alone laugh out loud.

Not funny! Some rude content!
Would you try another book from the authors and/or the narrators?
I might, but it would have to be a different subject and not live readings.
Would you ever listen to anything by the authors again?
Possibly.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Pretty much.
What character would you cut from Selected Shorts?
Not applicable due to this being a collection of stories.
Any additional comments?
I chose this to listen to with my teenage son as we both enjoy humor. There was little humor and a moderate amount of the 'f' word in several of the stories, used as in, "and he f*d her behind the dumpster", "and they f*d..." etc. I'm not objected to rude language in many cases, but the usage in these stories was just crude. It would be good to include some sort of info in the description if the story contains crudeness.None of the stories is what I would call funny; most were pretty weird. They were all performed live, so the actual reading of them varied a bit in volume and clarity, with some live audience sounds.I would definitely recommend not purchasing this book if you are expecting funny or if you have children listening, especially teenage boys.
