Charles Perrault (1628-1703) was a French author and academic with a passion for folk tales. The fairy tales of Charles Perrault have maintained their popularity over move than three centuries. A source for the Brothers Grimm, many of Perrault's tales were adapted by them. Perrault was born into a large, wealthy family in Paris. After receiving the best education available, Perrault went into government service and was instrumental in founding several academic institutions. Perrault came to writing fairy tales as retirement plan, publishing his first work at the age of 69. His first effort, The Tales of Mother Goose, was an instant success and he published several more tales before his death, at 75.
